She was 92.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Buckingham Palace <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/news-and-activity\/2025-09-05\/announcement-of-the-death-of-the-duchess-of-kent\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced her death<\/a> but did not provide additional details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The duchess kept a low profile for a member of the royal family, fulfilling less visible duties and steering clear of scandal at a time when more prominent royals were sometimes embroiled in it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To those who were not regular royal watchers, she was best known for comforting the losing finalist Jana Novotna in 1993 at Wimbledon, where the duchess was a regular. As The New York Times <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/07\/04\/sports\/tennis-graf-s-3d-straight-title-comes-gift-wrapped.html\" title=\"\">wrote<\/a> at the time, Novotna \u201ccried on the well-tailored shoulder of the Duchess of Kent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley was born on Feb. 22, 1933, in Hovingham, in Yorkshire, England, the daughter of William Worsley, a knighted wealthy landowner, and Joyce Morgan Brunner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though not royal, her family was aristocratic \u2014 she was born in the Hovingham Hall estate, on land the family had owned for 400 years \u2014 and she mixed with the smart set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That led her to meeting Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, a grandson of King George V and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.
