Ben Hopkins\u2019 script moves at breakneck speed, taking place across a single day while a military bomb expert (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/aaron-taylor-johnson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_aaron-taylor-johnson_1\" data-tag=\"aaron-taylor-johnson\">Aaron Taylor-Johnson<\/a>) attempts to nullify the explosive before it detonates. Sam Worthington and Theo James star as hired criminals hoping to take advantage of the chaos, alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a Metropolitan Police official.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was definitely a hassle,\u201d Mackenzie confesses to <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>about filming across 38 days in West London\u2019s packed Paddington Basin. \u201cWe had drone shots get canceled on the day because there was something happening with the King,\u201d he says (for those not familiar with London bedlam, elaborate road closures are often in place when Charles\u2019 motorcade is on the move through the British capital).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt didn\u2019t bother his star, who tells <em>THR<\/em> that local crews, pushed to the limit, were the picture of professionalism. \u201cI love filming in London and the local crews are exceptional,\u201d says <em>Tenet<\/em>, <em>Bullet Train<\/em> and <em>28 Years Later<\/em> actor Taylor-Johnson. \u201cI think the challenge for us was locking off streets and having our background cast evacuate en masse. Then resetting, whilst letting the traffic pass through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe traffic-dodging <em>Fuze<\/em>, produced by Sigma Films and Anton, came to Mackenzie over a decade ago. He wanted to create a \u201cmash-up\u201d of the dual tension of an unexploded bomb movie and a heist flick, but the project didn\u2019t come to fruition until recently, when the filmmaker found himself needing material with a lot less gloom, and a lot more boom. \u201cI\u2019d just done <em>Relay<\/em>,\u201d he explains about his 2024 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film_1\" data-tag=\"film\">film<\/a> \u2014 in theaters now \u2014 following a fixer (Riz Ahmed) who assists whistleblowers for corrupt companies. \u201cIt was quite lonely and intense \u2026 I felt like doing something a little bit more energized and slightly crazy. So it felt like the right time to be doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe director was beaming with pride by the time his cast signed on. \u201cIt\u2019s a precondition of mine,\u201d he says. \u201cI need to do the casting.\u201d He lauds the talent of Taylor-Johnson, whom Mackenzie had worked with before on 2018\u2019s <em>Outlaw King<\/em>, though was yet to see James\u2019 aptitude firsthand. \u201cThere\u2019s not much dialogue [in <em>Fuze<\/em>],\u201d says Mackenzie, \u201cbut you get a real sense of personality \u2026 And if some of those characters that aren\u2019t the leads are not firing on all cylinders, the film can really start flattening. But all those characters are alive and strong and doing good stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTaylor-Johnson is, in turn, full of praise for his two-time collaborator, who came to him with the script just after the industry-halting Hollywood strikes. \u201cIt felt original, fast-paced \u2014 a twisted, suspenseful crime drama set in London,\u201d is his tagline for <em>Fuze<\/em>. \u201cThe prospect of working with [Mackenzie] again felt exciting, as I love his process and style. He\u2019s always striving to capture the authenticity in every moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTaylor-Johnson is Will Tranter, an expert in the field of projectiles after serving abroad with the British army. \u201cWe dug deep to build the character,\u201d the Briton says to <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cOne example was bringing on Nick Orr, our professional EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] consultant. I was genuinely inspired by his service,\u201d he continues, explaining that Orr served in the military and now works as a EOD specialist with voluntary organizations in war-torn countries. And the consultant\u2019s teaching approach was all hands-on: \u201cWe had the opportunity to go through an \u2018explosives boot camp,\u2019 learning how to build and detonate them,\u201d Taylor-Johnson adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt just 91 minutes, the time-ticking thriller is a slick one, or as Mackenzie likes to put it: \u201ca bank robbery film sung by the Ramones.\u201d The Scot says: \u201cIt\u2019s unrepentantly designed to be an entertaining film. I\u2019ve been making films and it\u2019s [a lot of] straddling the entertainment and the interesting, trying to get a bit of both. But I think this is probably my most unashamedly pure, entertaining film. And it\u2019s very, very fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s handy, then, that he has a cast as lean as the movie\u2019s runtime: Taylor-Johnson teams with <em>Divergent<\/em> and <em>The White Lotus <\/em>star James for the first time ever, despite both Brits being from the same crop of extremely attractive, not-yet-middle-aged actors. \u201cI\u2019ve admired his work for a long time,\u201d Taylor-Johnson says about his co-star. \u201cWe had a rare weekend before filming with David to rehearse and collaborate on our scenes.\u201d His only regret from filming <em>Fuze<\/em>? \u201cThat we didn\u2019t have more to do, as he\u2019s a generous scene partner,\u201d says the 35-year-old. \u201cI was inspired by his choices and I really enjoyed being in his presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThankfully, they\u2019ll get some bro time in Toronto when <em>Fuze<\/em> heads to TIFF. It\u2019s a festival that Mackenzie is no stranger to \u2014 <em>Fuze<\/em> is his fifth film to screen here \u2014 but the \u201cprofound exposure anxiety\u201d never lets up. \u201cI\u2019m very happy sitting in an edit room, cutting,\u201d the filmmaker says with a laugh. \u201cPutting it out into the world is definitely not my favorite. But it has to be done \u2014 that\u2019s why we\u2019re making films. We\u2019re making films for audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>THR<\/em> has to ask: Is the door open for a <em>Fuze<\/em> sequel? \u201cYeah,\u201d Mackenzie responds. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve already started investigating.
