I love to sit on my couch and watch a \u201cCook\u2019s Country\u201d<\/a> marathon or Joan Crawford double feature as much as the next guy. But why live in New York City if not to take a biscuit-making class taught by a drag queen dressed as a \u201cQueen Bee\u201d<\/a>-era Crawford?<\/p>\n That thirst for singular culture \u2014 fancy and lowbrow, free and premium, family friendly and adults only \u2014 will guide this new column, which every month will keep you on top of what\u2019s happening in the city.<\/p>\n What kinds of events will I cover? The big stuff: If Beyonc\u00e9 or the Vienna Philharmonic are in town, or there\u2019s a buzzy exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I\u2019ll let you know. If the clock is ticking on a Broadway show or a dance company\u2019s season, you\u2019ll get a heads-up. A grindhouse film festival? Check.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n I\u2019ll choose lots of events across the five boroughs (and sometimes beyond), and I\u2019ll make sure at least a few are free. Here\u2019s what\u2019s in store this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n On Sept. 17, Dua Lipa<\/strong> \u2014 pop diva, book club curator<\/a>, media mogul \u2014 starts a four-night run<\/a> of her \u201cRadical Optimism Tour\u201d at Madison Square Garden, where other fierce women are also playing multiple nights this month: Tate McRae<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 3-4), Lady Gaga<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 6-7) and Kali Uchis<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 11-12).<\/p>\n And for every generation, there\u2019s a concert. Boomers: Eric Clapton<\/a><\/strong> at the Garden (Sept. 19). Gen X: Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge<\/a><\/strong> at Radio City Music Hall (Sept. 10). Millennials: Blink-182<\/a><\/strong> at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, N.Y. (Sept. 6). Gen Z: Benson Boone<\/a><\/strong> at the Garden (Sept. 5).<\/p>\n It\u2019s still warm enough to catch free movies al fresco. Slip on your chicest \u201cPoor Things\u201d frock and enter the Emma Stone Look-Alike Contest<\/strong> before a screening of \u201cBirdman\u201d<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 with free refreshments! \u2014 in Tompkins Square Park courtesy of the Lower East Side Film Festival<\/a> (Sept. 17).<\/p>\n The 63rd New York Film Festival<\/a><\/strong> opens on Sept. 26 with Luca Guadagnino\u2019s \u201c<\/strong>After the Hunt<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d<\/strong> starring Julia Roberts as a philosophy professor caught between a student (Ayo Edebiri) and a colleague accused of sexual assault (Andrew Garfield). The festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center, runs through Oct. 13.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n For laughs, big names are taking over big venues: At Madison Square Garden, there\u2019s Adam Sandler<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 15) and Nate Bargatze<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 26-27), and at the Nederlander Theater, Jeff Ross\u2019s Broadway debut, \u201cTake a Banana for the Ride,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> continues through Sept. 28.<\/p>\n In 2018, panic ensued when an emergency alert erroneously warned Hawaii of an incoming missile attack. (\u201cSomeone clicked the wrong thing on the computer,\u201d an official said<\/a> at the time.) That incident inspired \u201cThis Is Not a Drill,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> a new musical from Holly Doubet that kicks off the York Theater Company\u2019s season<\/a> on Sept. 9 at the Theater at St. Jean\u2019s on the Upper East Side.<\/p>\n In 1977, Gena Rowlands gave a knockout performance as an aging actress battling personal demons in \u201c<\/strong>Opening Night<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d<\/strong> directed by her husband, John Cassavetes. On Sept. 15, Town Hall hosts a one-night-only performance<\/a> of Rufus Wainwright\u2019s musical stage adaptation<\/strong> of the film, with a heavy-hitter cast that includes Sara Bareilles, Darren Criss, Patti LuPone and Wainwright himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Brooklyn Book Festival<\/a><\/strong> (Sept. 14-22) offers talks with writers from around the world, a day of children\u2019s events, and workshops and discussions throughout the city. Joyce Carol Oates, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Alison Bechdel are among the participating authors. Most events are free, but the books are not, so come with cash and tote bags.<\/p>\n Since the early 1990s, Sally Mann<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s black-and-white portraits of her children have drawn praise but also outrage for their perceived indecency<\/a>. On Sept. 10, the New School hosts Mann for a talk<\/a><\/strong> about her new book, \u201cArt Work: On the Creative Life,\u201d a collection of photographs, journal entries and letters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n On Sept. 20, the Socrates Sculpture Park<\/a><\/strong> in Long Island City, Queens, and the Buena Onda Collective<\/a><\/strong>, a group of artist-activists engaged with \u201ceco-centricity,\u201d offer a free family-friendly workshop<\/a><\/strong> that explores the park\u2019s ecosystem. You\u2019ll learn hands-on recording techniques, assemble interactive sound sculptures, and finish with a \u201ccommunity tuning session.\u201d<\/p>\n New York City Opera mounts a free, fully staged production of Bizet\u2019s opera \u201cCarmen\u201d<\/a><\/strong> in Bryant Park (Sept. 4-5). Enrico Castiglione directs Lisa Chavez as Carmen, Jeremy Brauner as Don Jose and Eva Dorofeeva in the role of Micaela, with Constantine Orbelian conducting.<\/p>\n The Native American dance collective Indigenous Enterprise<\/a><\/strong> returns to the Joyce Theater<\/a> (Sept. 16-21) with its newest production, \u201cStill Here,\u201d a blend of live powwow drumming and singing that tells a tender story about the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n When it comes to New York lotteries, there are the scratch-off kind, the \u201cHamilton\u201d kind<\/a> and the Hart Island<\/a> kind. A lottery<\/a> is the only way to take the Urban Park Rangers<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 <\/strong>free two-hour tour <\/strong>(Sept. 23) of the Bronx island, home to the largest publicly funded cemetery in the country and, founded in 1869, an important historical site.
