Sabrina Carpenter showed her support for the LGBTQ+ community in her performance of the Man\u2019s Best Friend<\/a> <\/em>song \u201cTears\u201d at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. The song began with Carpenter emerging from a literal manhole to sing alongside dancers that included RuPaul\u2019s<\/em> Drag Race<\/em> stars Symone, Willam, Denali, Laganja Estranja, and Lexi Love, as well as ballroom star Honey Balenciaga.<\/p>\n As Carpenter repeated the line, \u201cI get wet at the thought of you \u2026\u201d during the performance, tears literally dripped from the ceiling, completely soaking her (in case anyone in the audience thought Carpenter was too subtle with her lyrics). Some of the dancers, which also included two very ripped cops who joined Carpenter, carried protest signs with messages like, \u201cProtect Trans Rights,\u201d \u201cSupport Drag,\u201d and \u201cLove Each Other.\u201d It was a bold, political statement delivered in the way only Carpenter could.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n The artist is up for eight VMAs this year, including Video of the Year and Best Pop for \u201cManchild,\u201d <\/a>Best Pop Artist, and Best Album for last year\u2019s Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em>. \u201cManchild\u201d is also up for a slew of technical awards, including Best Direction, Cinematography, Editing, and Visual Effects.<\/p>\n This marks Carpenter\u2019s second time gracing the VMAs stage after she made her debut at the show last year. She performed a space-themed medley<\/a> of her Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/a> <\/em>hits \u201cEspresso, \u201cPlease Please Please,\u201d and \u201cTaste\u201d \u2014 complete with an extra-terrestrial makeout session \u2014 and took home the Moonman for Song of the Year for \u201cEspresso.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Carpenter released Man\u2019s Best Friend <\/em>at the end of August<\/a>, almost exactly one year after Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em>. Carpenter crafted her new album with many of the same people who helped her make\u00a0Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em>, including songwriter Amy Allen and producers\/songwriters Jack Antonoff and John Ryan.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking with Rolling Stone <\/em>for a recent cover story<\/a>, Carpenter said the album contains \u201csome of the most honest work I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d adding it \u201cwasn\u2019t written from a place of \u2018How do I one-up myself?\u2019 or \u2018How do I re-create something else?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Of choosing to make a new album so quickly after Short n\u2019 Sweet<\/em>, Carpenter said she took inspiration from artists like Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, who used to release 10-track albums every year. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018When did we stop doing that?\u2019 Writers write, they make music, and they release music,\u201d she said. \u201cI understand the beauty of disappearing. My last two albums both took two and a half years to make, and they needed to. I just think every project is different.
