The Video Vanguard Award is MTV\u2019s highest honor and is given out only to artists who\u2019ve had a profound impact on music video and popular culture. Fellow pop diva Ariana Grande<\/a> introduced Carey as its latest winner Sunday, leading to a polarizing performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Carey, who seemed to be lip-syncing for at least part of her time onstage, certainly appeared to give the crowd what they wanted \u2014 and performed bits of some of her most famous songs, \u201cSugar Sweet,\u201d \u201cFantasy,\u201d \u201cHeartbreaker,\u201d and finally, \u201cWe Belong Together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Critics couldn\u2019t help but feel that those songs didn\u2019t belong to that performance, however.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cam i crazy or does it seem like mariah carey is lip synching and also her being stiff as a board is killing me,\u201d wrote one user on X<\/a>, with another person commenting<\/a>: \u201cMariah Carey looks breathtaking while giving absolutely nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Carey has been a pop culture mainstay for several decades and went home a winner regardless. She not only won her very first VMA<\/a> during the preshow for 2025\u2019s \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d but truly joined the annals of MTV history as a newfound vanguard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThank you so much MTV for giving me the Vanguard Award,\u201d said Carey at the podium<\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m getting my first VMA tonight. I just have one question: What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?! I\u2019m kidding, I love you, MTV \u2026 This is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBeing here brings back amazing memories,\u201d she continued. \u201cLike when I presented LL Cool J his Vanguard Award, or when Whitney Houston and I opened the show with a faux standoff … It was a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The award has previously gone to the likes of Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Beyonc\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Grande said in her introduction Sunday that Carey, the one true \u201cqueen\u201d of vocalists, has sung \u201cthe soundtrack of our lives.\u201d While her Vanguard win is an invaluable achievement, it certainly seemed that many social media users were eager to press \u201cskip.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
