When fans tuned in to The Howard Stern Show on Monday, anticipating the radio host to finally address the rumors about his contract, they were surprised when it wasn\u2019t Stern\u2019s voice that filled the airwaves. Instead, Andy Cohen took he microphone, explaining that he is now taking over Stern\u2019s timeslot, but stressing, \u201cthis is not how things were meant to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stern is here to stay, he said after returning to his show 20 minutes in. \u201cI\u2019m going to have to fill everyone in,\u201d he said, explaining that he missed last week\u2019s show not because he was still in contract negotiations, but because he was sick. \u201cI was just getting so fucking annoyed with everyone writing me, asking me if I was okay because I\u2019d been fired.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m minding my own business, enjoying my summer vacation,\u201d he said. \u201c[A reporter] says that I\u2019ve been fired for being too woke. In light of the Stephen Colbert firing \u2014 because the word on Stephen was that it was all part of this merger, and they fired Stephen because he\u2019s too woke \u2014 the story then became \u2018Howard Stern is fired because he\u2019s too woke.\u2019 I still don\u2019t even know what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThen all of a sudden, I\u2019m sitting home and everybody I know in my world, even peripherally, is writing me. \u2018Are you okay, are you okay?\u2019 \u201d he continued. \u201cNone of it is true, zero truth.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat pisses me off is that now I can\u2019t leave. I\u2019ve been thinking about retiring. Now I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n While he didn\u2019t go into details about his contract and any renegotiations, he said he\u2019s been talking to SiriusXM about \u201chow we go forward in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m very happy at Sirius,\u201d he said. \u201cNothing was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n The Howard Stern Show has been on air for over two decades. The show gained popularity when it was nationally syndicated on radio from 1986 to 2005 before he moved over to SiriusXM in 2006.<\/p>\n Rumors about Stern\u2019s possible retirement started in early August, when the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0reported that his \u201clong-running SiriusXM radio show is in jeopardy as the end of his $500 million five-year contract looms.\u201d One source told the outlet that Stern was considering signing a one- or two-year contract, while another said they would officially be parting ways.\u00a0The Sun, meanwhile, reported that the show was set to end due to SiriusXM and Stern\u2019s inability to come to terms on a new contract<\/p>\n This led to speculation all across the media landscape that Stern was indeed on the verge of ending his radio career. President Trump even voiced his opinion. \u201cHoward Stern is a name I haven\u2019t heard,\u201d he said.<\/a> \u201cI used to do his show. We used to have fun, but I haven\u2019t heard that name in a long time. What happened? He got terminated? You know when he went down? When he endorsed Hillary Clinton, he lost his audience. People said, \u2018Give me a break.\u2019 He went down when he endorsed Hillary Clinton.\u201d<\/p>\n But throughout it all, Stern himself remained quiet as he enjoyed his summer hiatus. But on August 15, Stern\u2019s Instagram posted a promo that leaned into the drama. \u201cFired? Retiring? Canceled? Bye-Bye Booey?\u201d the post asked. \u201cHoward Stern will speak on Tuesday, September 2.\u201d It was followed up with numerous memes, including the triple Spider-Man one, that continued to tease the issue out.<\/p>\n However, hours before the planned September 2 announcement, The Howard Stern Show revealed that the shock jock would instead return to the airwaves on Monday, September 8<\/a>. No reason was given for the delay, but rumors circulated that the contract renewal hadn\u2019t been completed yet.<\/p>\n Sirius XM chief content officer Scott Greenstein appeared to confirm the speculation at a conference last week (via Variety<\/span>), \u201cWe\u2019d love [for Stern] to stay.
