It\u2019s also dependable, a signature of the cozy, comfort TV the show is often described as.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThings can happen to [the characters], but you\u2019re pretty sure you\u2019re not going to get <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> or Ned Stark-ed,\u201d Megan Vick, freelance writer and Television Critics Association board member, tells Yahoo, referencing one of the biggest plot twists in recent TV history when the presumed <em>Game of Thrones <\/em>protagonist was dramatically killed off in Season 1, heightening the sense that no one was safe. Instead, you go into it with the mindset of, \u201c\u2018I\u2019m going to spend 45 minutes with these people who are likable and are trying to do their best.\u2019 There is no politics. It\u2019s just, \u2018OK, how are we going to save this campground? She was scrolling through Netflix, bored with what she had been watching, saw that the show was new, and quickly binge-watched the first two seasons in a few days. Desperate to know what happened in Season 3, LaMalfa \u2014 who admits she\u2019s an \u201cabsolute sucker for shows like this,\u201d listing <em>Hart of Dixie <\/em>and <em>Virgin River <\/em>as some of her favorites \u2014 downloaded the CW app and watched the rest of the episodes there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt represented family [and] community. It was comforting to watch the characters interact in the way that they did,\u201d LaMalfa tells Yahoo. \u201cI think that&#8217;s what really drew me to keep watching because it didn&#8217;t seem fake to me, like I was sitting [on a couch] watching TV. It was like I was going to Sullivan\u2019s Crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The fact that the characters didn\u2019t lead extraordinary lives also made it easier to digest, she says. \u201cThey have normal jobs and that\u2019s relatable to an audience. You can just jump in and feel like you\u2019re part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@kaitlinkemp_\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kaitlin Kemp;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kaitlin Kemp<\/a>, a 33-year-old filmmaker based in New York City, who was looking for something to watch \u201cto help me get off my phone and decompress,\u201d was sold by the \u201cserene-looking landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What she didn\u2019t account for was how invested she would become. \u201cMy stress levels jumped the second the show started,\u201d Kemp tells Yahoo.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"the-virgin-river-boost\"><strong>The <\/strong><strong><em>Virgin River <\/em><\/strong><strong>boost<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Sullivan\u2019s Crossing<\/em> holds much of the same DNA as Netflix\u2019s longest-running scripted series, <em>Virgin River. <\/em>Both are romantic dramas inspired by novels written by Carr, who has a large, engaged fan base. And both are <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/virgin-river-streaming-suits-netflix-202500641.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:now streaming hits for Netflix;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">now streaming hits for Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Vick credits <em>Virgin River<\/em>\u2019s sustained success<em>\u00a0<\/em>as a key factor fueling <em>Sullivan Crossing<\/em>\u2019s current uptick in streams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere\u2019s a very large audience for <em>Virgin River<\/em>. So when you\u2019re looking for shows like <em>Virgin River <\/em>[on Netflix]<em>, Sullivan\u2019s Crossing <\/em>is an automatic win,\u201d Vick says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe pipeline from <em>Virgin River <\/em>to <em>Sullivan\u2019s Crossing <\/em>is very easy,\u201d she continues. \u201cNetflix [has] the algorithm, so they know if you\u2019ve watched <em>Virgin River<\/em> to put this in your \u2018We think you should watch this\u2019 queue, and that\u2019s how it takes off. (Michael Tompkins\/CW\/Freemantle\/Courtesy Everett Collection)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cGiving people realistic characters on identifiable journeys that they connect with\u201d is the basis for <em>Sullivan\u2019s Crossing<\/em>, Roth says, \u201cbecause we live in this world where we&#8217;re talking through screens and we&#8217;re not connecting emotionally with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The show represents \u201cthis world that we would all maybe like one day to live in,\u201d Roth says. \u201cIf we walk out of our backyards and we walk into Sullivan&#8217;s Crossing, you give them that community that they&#8217;re missing, the support they&#8217;re missing in their real lives and allow them to express their emotions through a third party, which is the character that they&#8217;re going on this journey with.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"a-modern-day-soap-opera\">&#8216;A modern-day soap opera&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Sullivan\u2019s Crossing<\/em> may follow a formula, but it also isn\u2019t afraid to throw the occasional curveball and craft memorable cliffhangers to keep people on their toes. After all, it <em>is <\/em>television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhat I love most about <em>Sullivan\u2019s Crossing <\/em>is how unpredictable it is,\u201d Kemp says, who describes it as \u201ca modern-day soap opera\u201d that she can\u2019t quite quit. \u201cYou truly never know where the writers are going to take the story or how long you have to meet a character before they die or come close to death\u2026 And the cliffhangers are truly unmatched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A brain tumor makes a beloved character face her mortality, Sully\u2019s guilt over an accident he caused leads him to take on the financial burden of raising a child and Maggie\u2019s surprise pregnancy at the end of Season 2 are just a few examples of the familiar conflicts that have plagued the characters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">LaMalfa agrees, referencing the dramatic diner fire in the Season 2 finale \u2014 in which Sully\u2019s fate was left unanswered after he raced into the fire to rescue those trapped \u2014 as an emotional game-changer. \u201cThe stakes were low and then something like that happened; it just brought everything from point A to point B,\u201d she says. \u201cThings got more intense and then [I] got 10 times more invested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAny good show is going to draw your audience in. And if it&#8217;s too easy of a watch, you might get bored with the show or you might be making yourself a sandwich, which you don&#8217;t want. You want to keep the audience&#8217;s attention,\u201d Roth says.
