I\u2019ve had to figure out how to have my make-up done in a way that doesn\u2019t make me feel trapped or tight or like the wrong thing. Now I just tell people, \u2018Treat it like male grooming.\u2019 There always need to be options for clothing, or shirts. I had no idea there would be days when I felt totally out-of-body, and it was because I was wearing women\u2019s clothes when it wasn\u2019t the right thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2023, Lorde taped her chest for the first time. The experience coincided with when she started writing her second <em>Virgin <\/em>single, \u201cMan of the Year.\u201d The track and accompanying music video draw inspiration from this very moment \u2014 from the \u201cvery pure version\u201d of herself she connected with after taping up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019d really been feeling this stuff bubble up and talking about it a lot in therapy,\u201d she told Dazed. \u201cWe started writing the song, and I saw this TV performance of it [in my mind\u2019s eye], and it wasn\u2019t even finished. And in the performance I saw myself in jeans, no shirt. And I thought about how I would actually do that on TV. It wasn\u2019t a bra. I had this roll of tape and grabbed it, put my jeans on, taped up, and saw myself \u2013 and was like, \u2018F**k, that\u2019s me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On \u201cHammer,\u201d the opening track of <em>Virgin<\/em>, Lorde, at one point, sings, <em>Some days I\u2019m a woman\/Some days I\u2019m a man<\/em>. The fluidity of her gender expression has been a hotly discussed topic even before the album\u2019s release in June. In May, she recounted a conversation with Chappell Roan <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/lorde-m-intense-bitch-130000674.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:to Rolling Stone;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">to Rolling Stone<\/a>, with whom she\u2019s become close friends, regarding her changing identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cShe was like, \u2018So, are you nonbinary now?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I\u2019m a woman except for the days when I\u2019m a man.\u2019 I know that\u2019s not a very satisfying answer, but there\u2019s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up,\u201d the \u201cCurrent Affairs\u201d singer recalled to Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lorde has since clarified her conversation with \u201cThe Subway\u201d singer, telling Dazed, \u201cI think I misquoted that \u2014 I feel really bad. She said, very sweetly, something like, \u2018So your pronouns are changing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">How Lorde approaches her gender identity is considerably matter-of-fact \u2014 <em>this <\/em>is how she\u2019s feeling right now. <em>This <\/em>is what feels truest to herself in this moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s all a journey. I have no idea where it\u2019s gonna go; it doesn\u2019t feel like I\u2019ve arrived anywhere permanent at all. I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll keep unfurling, the way these things do. It really took me by surprise how much shame I felt \u2014 feeling all that come up wasn\u2019t easy,\u201d she told Dazed. \u201cEven as I see my friends coming fully into their genders, feeling nothing but pride, love, respect and bliss. I just think it takes time to metabolise and find itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The \u201cShapeshifter\u201d singer seems comfortable in the not knowing. She\u2019s in no rush to figure it all out, telling the magazine, \u201cI\u2019m excited to find out where that lands, if it ever does land.
