Baker Boy<\/a> has shared the fourth single from his forthcoming second studio album Djandjay<\/em>, \u2018Thick Skin\u2019. He enlisted what he has described as a \u201cBlak choir\u201d of acclaimed female Indigenous vocalists to feature on the track \u2013 namely Thelma Plum<\/a>, Emma Donovan<\/a>, Kee\u2019ahn<\/a> and Jada Weazel<\/a>. In a press statement, Baker Boy explained that he wrote the song following the Indigenous Voice referendum.<\/p>\n \u201cIt wasn\u2019t anger at the result, as much,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was [more] the way mob became a topic of conversation, and mottos like \u2018if you don\u2019t know, vote no\u2019 encouraging ignorance. It highlighted the everyday experience of being Yol\u014bu, [and] being Indigenous in this country, and that hit me hard.\u201d The single\u2019s accompanying music video has also been shared, directed by the team of Aurie Indianna and Jordan Ruyi Blanch. Indianna and Blanch have been creating a linear story between all of the music videos for Djandjay<\/em>, with this video picking up where the one for \u2018Lightning\u2019 left off.<\/p>\n Working with collaborators Pip \u201cCount Bounce\u201d Norman and Robert Amoruso, who co-wrote and co-produced Djandjay<\/em>, \u2018Thick Skin\u2019 is sonically inspired by punk rock \u2013 which, per Baker Boy\u2019s statement, is a sound he has wanted to pursue \u201cfor awhile\u201d. \u201cThis felt like the perfect track for me to let loose in that space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not natural for me to express anger through my music \u2013 I have this reputation for positivity \u2013 but I think the punk inspired production allowed me to really say what I wanted to say in a way that\u2019s new and experimental for me, but also really authentic. It just came out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like bringing it in on a chorus like this with three amazing sister songwriters coming together on this track,\u201d said Donovan in a statement to social media. \u201cReally reminds me of the power and strength that we have as Aboriginal women, coming together to support our brother. [This song is] a huge reminder of the thick skin I have had to have growing up in this country, and even more so today with how I need to stand strong. My songs and messages I put out will always be my way of survival and strength to continue my voice and age old culture.\u201d<\/p>\n Djandjay<\/em> is set for release next month on Friday, October 10th via Island Records Australia. It includes the tracks \u2018Peacekeeper\u2019<\/a>, \u2018Freak Out\u2019<\/a> (featuring Briggs<\/a> and Haiku Hands<\/a>) and the aforementioned \u2018Lightning\u2019, a collaboration with Redd<\/a>.
