Did everyone enjoy the air show this weekend? How repugnantly privileged we are to be entertained by the sights and sounds of warfare. In less fortunate places around the world, these are the sights and sounds that are seen and heard just before someone\u2019s city or town is reduced to rubble. That monstrous roar that cuts through the sky like thunder is what is heard just before someone\u2019s life is taken in an instant, with a sudden flash of fire and human carnage. But here in America, the spectacles of death planes flying overhead are a jolly form of amusement\u00a0for those of us lucky enough to never have to experience the horrors of war on our own soil. How fortunate we are to be on this side of that equation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
While we\u2019re on the subject \u2014 I\u2019d like to take this opportunity to thank those who used the air show as a platform to protest the I.C.E. deportations flying out of Pease Airport. In the state whose motto is \u201clive free or die,\u201d we should never become numb to masked kidnappers, the absence of due process, and the abandonment of the American way. We all grew up reciting the words \u201cwith liberty and justice for all.\u201d I think it\u2019s about time we start living up to those words.<\/p>\n
Joseph Conlon<\/strong><\/p>\n Portsmouth<\/p>\n Sept. 7 — To the Editor:<\/p>\n I\u2019m sure I wasn\u2019t alone, over the last few days, in thinking about the millions of people worldwide who must rush to safety when they hear military planes overhead.<\/p>\n My dad was an Air Force pilot. I have so much respect for the skill and bravery of the Navy\u2019s Blue Angel pilots. And I thank my lucky stars that I live in a place where the sound of military jets overhead, at least for the moment, is an air show.<\/p>\n Linda Anderson<\/strong><\/p>\n Eliot, Maine\u00a0<\/p>\n September 4 \u2212 To the Editor:<\/p>\n Right now I am literally shaking from the noise of the so-called Blue Angels.\u00a0 They should NOT be allowed to fly over residential areas!\u00a0 Our entire area is under assault by these awful jets, spewing air pollution and noise pollution constantly!\u00a0It should be illegal. I am tempted to sue for emotional duress.<\/p>\n I can hear a bird freaking out in our backyard.\u00a0 There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this level of thunderous noise! Can’t wait until they’re gone!\u00a0 May they NEVER come back!<\/p>\n Now I know how people in a war zone feel!<\/p>\n I wish we had the money to go away for the weekend!<\/p>\n Cate Jones<\/strong><\/p>\n Portsmouth<\/p>\n Sept. 7 \u2212 To the Editor:<\/p>\n I was under the impression that New Hampshire only had a Motor Speedway in Loudon. Apparently, there is another one on Interstate 95 from Portsmouth to the Mass line. Frequently cars are driving 90-100 mph (estimate) and even tractor trailer trucks at 90. Most offenders are from Maine, MA and NH.<\/p>\n Over the past year there have been several serious accidents in this section, probably due to speeding, tail gating, aggressive lane changes and distracted drivers. There is some discussion about erecting a median barrier, which may help prevent cross over accidents, however, the real problem is speeding.<\/p>\n NH has an excellent State Police force, but\u2026 where are they ? If hiring more troopers is a problem, maybe we should pay more and respect them.<\/p>\nThankful that jets overhead are just for an air show<\/h2>\n
