Bill Maher<\/a> is never afraid to share his opinion, especially on political issues, yet he thinks other late-night talk show hosts should keep their political leanings to themselves.<\/p>\n Speaking to The Sopranos<\/em><\/a> alum Drea de Matteo<\/a> on the latest episode of his Club Random<\/em><\/a> podcast, Maher said he missed the days when late-night hosts kept politics out of comedy. \u201cLetterman, Leno, you know, Carson\u2026they never told you their politics,\u201d he said, per The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n He then took aim at The Late Show<\/em><\/a>\u2018s Stephen Colbert<\/a>, The Daily Show<\/em><\/a>\u2018s Jon Stewart<\/a>, Last Week Tonight<\/em><\/a>\u2018s John Oliver<\/a>, and Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>, saying they \u201cvery predictably\u201d parrot \u201cwhatever MSNBC was saying\u201d on their late-night shows.<\/p>\n The Real Time<\/em><\/a> host went on to say that the problem is \u201cthat everybody makes their decisions based on the politics of the art and not the art itself,\u201d adding, \u201cI\u2019m not knocking them\u2026 The audience, and of course half the country, was like, \u2018Well this is just insulting to me.’\u201d<\/p>\n As an example of a late-night host keeping politics out of comedy, Maher pointed to Jay Leno<\/a>, explaining, \u201cLeno just played it right down the middle. He was just like, \u2018I will make fun of everybody.\u2019 And that\u2019s, in a different sort of way, what I\u2019m doing also. I just don\u2019t stop criticizing just because you\u2019re on the left part. If you do something stupid, I\u2019m going to call it out no matter where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n Leno drew ire back in July<\/a> for making similar comments, telling the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, \u201cI love political humor, don\u2019t get me wrong. But it\u2019s just what happens when people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other. Why shoot for just half an audience all the time?\u201d<\/p>\n While Leno received backlash from various late-night hosts, including Stewart, who called the former Tonight Show<\/em> host\u2019s take \u201cf****** ridiculous,\u201d Maher said he agreed, noting, \u201cthe most important thing\u201d in this new \u201cera\u201d is \u201cto signal to the audience what your politics are.\u201d<\/p>\n Maher, who argued late-night hosts should keep away from politics, visited the White House earlier this year for a meeting with President Donald Trump<\/a>. After the meeting, Maher described Trump as \u201cgracious and measured.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
