Sir Ian McKellen<\/a> has been forced to withdraw from the international premiere of his latest film The Christophers on the advice of doctors.<\/p>\n

The celebrated actor, 86, had been due to attend the Toronto Film Festival<\/a> for the unveiling of the Steven Soderbergh-directed black comedy but instead recorded a pre-taped message for the event.<\/p>\n

As reported by the Daily Mail<\/a>, McKellen told the outlet his \u201cmedical advisers\u201d advised him not to fly, adding \u201cBetter safe than sorry\u201d.<\/p>\n

The film, which also stars Michaela Coel<\/a>, James Corden<\/a> and Jessica Gunning, centres on the estranged children of a once-famous artist who hire a forger to finish his incomplete works so they can be \u201crediscovered\u201d and sold after his death.<\/p>\n

The Christophers was penned by Ed Solomon, Soderbergh\u2019s longtime collaborator whose credits include the 2021 crime thriller No Sudden Move, HBO\u2019s Mosaic and Bill & Ted Face the Music.<\/p>\n

Production moved at remarkable speed, with McKellen filming his scenes as recently as February \u2013 his first project since suffering a serious fall on stage during a West End performance<\/a> last summer.<\/p>\n

In June 2024, the actor was performing in a production of Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre in London when he lost his footing in a fight scene and fell from the stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Lord of the Rings<\/a> star suffered injuries to his wrist and neck and was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the show\u2019s national tour.<\/p>\n

Sir Ian previously opened about his recovery<\/a> and revealed plans to return to the theatre world while appearing on Simon Mayo\u2019s Greatest Hits Radio Drivetime show.<\/p>\n

He said last September: \u201cWhat I\u2019ve been left with is not so much a physical injury, but a mental disturbance because I thought it was much more serious at the time than it was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I thought I was about to die, I thought I\u2019d broken my neck I\u2019d forgotten but apparently, I\u2019d said, \u2018I\u2019ve broken my neck, I am dying\u2019 and if I said it, I must have thought that I was.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019ve just got to deal with that. I\u2019m not dying, not just yet and I hope I\u2019ll get back to acting again on stage.\u2019<\/p>\n

When probed by the broadcaster when he would know if the time was right, Sir Ian replied: \u201cThat\u2019s a good point \u2013 I think I\u2019ll know because the contract says I have to turn up at a particular time! I\u2019m not proposing to work on stage for another year and I think by then this will all be alright.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
