Author Stephen King<\/a> released his top 10 movies list on Monday, including one choice that might scare up your curiosity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The prolific novelist noted that he excluded four films based on his own stories, \u201cMisery,\u201d \u201cThe Shawshank Redemption,\u201d \u201cThe Green Mile\u201d and \u201cStand by Me.\u201d That suggests his 10 picks are actually part of a top 14.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n King\u2019s tastes ran classic. He chose many movies that might feel at home in other all-time rankings: \u201cCasablanca,\u201d \u201cThe Treasure of the Sierra Madre,\u201d \u201cJaws,\u201d \u201cThe Godfather: Part II,\u201d \u201cDouble Indemnity,\u201d and \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A comedy time-loop hit, \u201cGroundhog Day,\u201d also made the cut, along with the 1973 gangster movie that helped stoke director Martin Scorsese\u2019s greatness, \u201cMean Streets.\u201d King also included \u201cThe Getaway\u201d from iconic action director Sam Peckinpah.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSorcerer,\u201d director William Friedkin\u2019s 1977 box-office bomb about desperate dudes transporting nitroglycerine in Latin America, rounded out the list. (King actually wrote it down first, but the titles were in no particular order.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSorcerer?\u201d you might ask. Same here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSorcerer\u201d later built a positive critical following<\/a> among audiences. It got a huge thumbs-up<\/a> from the King-snubbed director Quentin Tarantino, who called it a \u201cmasterpiece,\u201d and from \u201cThe Godfather Part II\u201d director Francis Ford Coppola, who said it was a \u201cforgotten classic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n That sure sounds better than Rex Reed\u2019s mixed review<\/a> back in the day<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t know if there\u2019s an audience for this kind of grueling, depressing experience, but Sorcerer might bring back the kind of moviegoer who used to cheer Humphrey Bogart.
