It plays a key role in nearly all bodily structures and functions, including the growth and repair of muscles, bones, skin and hair.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/how-much-protein-do-you-need-every-day-201506188096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Recommended Dietary Allowance<\/a>\u00a0is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight \u2014 or 0.36 grams per pound. For a 150-pound person, that\u2019s 54 grams of protein daily.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The protein-maxxing trend involves eating copious amounts of protein to lose weight and build lean muscle. <span class=\"credit\">Vadym \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The latest health craze beefs up protein intake to extremes \u2014 up to 100 grams a day \u2014 in the name of losing weight and gaining lean muscle.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the equivalent of four eggs, one can of tuna, three beef meatballs, 2 ounces of turkey bacon and 3 ounces of turkey breast, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/health\/nutrition\/heres-what-100-grams-of-protein-looks-like-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to CNET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Jillian Kubala, a registered dietitian based in Westhampton, NY, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/100-grams-of-protein-a-day-11744717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently called<\/a> 100g a \u201cperfect amount\u00a0for many people, including people who are physically active and engage in regular exercise, like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UK nutritionist Emily English <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/how-a-nutritionist-eats-100g-of-protein-every-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said she eats<\/a> 100g a day to feel \u201cproperly satisfied without overthinking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tracy Anderson, personal trainer to Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebs, called the protein craze \u201cvomitous.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But fitness entrepreneur <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tracyanderson.com\/\">Tracy Anderson<\/a>, personal trainer to Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and other stars, isn\u2019t a fan. She \u201ccannot stand\u201d the protein-maxxing trend.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cEating 100 grams of animal protein a day? It is vomitous to me,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/tracy-anderson-skin-care-routine-best-beauty-products.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anderson, 50, told The Cut<\/a> this week. \u201cIt\u2019s dirty, and it\u2019s bad for the environment, and it\u2019s harmful to the animal, and the people, in my opinion, look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Excessive protein intake can cause serious health problems over time.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it can alter the composition of urine and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/22\/health\/popular-diet-followed-by-joe-rogan-linked-to-kidney-stones\/\">increase the risk of kidney stones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And more saturated fat from red meat <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/03\/health\/soda-processed-meats-can-raise-heart-disease-risk-study\/\">has been linked<\/a> to a higher risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590332224003178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts have also warned<\/a> that overconsumption of protein can negatively affect the environment by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, depleting water resources and expanding land use.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anderson, left, is a proponent of a predominantly vegan diet. <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been vegan a couple of different times in my life, and I will never eat a four-legged animal again,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was on world tours with Madonna, I had young Thai coconuts shipped to me wherever I was, and I was hacking them off with a machete and drinking them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have access to Thai coconuts, beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, edamame, nuts, seeds, quinoa, oats, nutritional yeast, seitan (wheat-based meat substitute) and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/article\/best-greens-powders-review\/\">spirulina<\/a> (a type of algae) are great vegan protein sources.<\/p>\n<p>Vegans and vegetarians need to make sure they get enough protein.
