During her tenure at NBCUniversal, Hammer oversaw a portfolio of cable channels including USA, Syfy, and Bravo, and launched hit shows including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suits, Monk, Psych, Battlestar Galactica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Robot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Since 2020, she served as Vice Chair of NBCUniversal before recently departing the company. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is now at work on a business incubator called BONKARS, which will build out ideas (\u201csome grounded and some bonkars\u201d), all with the intent to help women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book: \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bonnie-hammer.com\/book\/\">15 Lies Women Are Told at Work and the Truth We Need to Succeed.<\/a>\u201d In it, Hammer provides <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hermoney.com\/earn\/careers\/the-lies-women-are-told-about-getting-ahead-at-work-bonnie-hammer-podcast-438\/\">a wide range of career advice<\/a>, such as her ABC guide to decision-making (Analyze, Brainstorm, Compare \u2026 all the way through G \u2013 don\u2019t ignore your Gut!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How She Does It,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she is sharing her hard-won wisdom with Karen Finerman, including how to navigate corporate changes, understand your worth, and make strategic career moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Master the Art of Reading the Room<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonnie Hammer\u2019s ability to survive numerous mergers, acquisitions, and leadership changes throughout her career isn\u2019t just luck; it\u2019s a carefully developed skill. \u201cThe one thing I realized I learned \u2026\u00a0 to do well was read a room,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Hammer explains. \u201cSo that when every change happened\u2026 I sat back, I tried to figure out the new boss, the new culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This strategic approach means understanding whether new leadership prioritizes creativity and content or focuses more on the bottom line. \u201cIf you think Jeff Zucker and Barry Diller were alike, hell no. And Comcast and GE? Total opposites,\u201d Hammer notes.\u00a0 Her focus on creating excellent content remains constant, but with each new leader, she makes adjustments, including making sure her communication with her bosses reflects their priorities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reject \u201cFake It Til You Make It\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Hammer\u2019s strongest convictions is rejecting the idea of \u201cfake it \u2018til you make it.\u201d Instead, she advises listeners to be honest and upfront and what they know \u2013 and what they don\u2019t know or don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe minute you get caught in a lie, the minute you pretend you know something you don\u2019t know, and you get caught, you lose trust instantly. And it\u2019s so hard to get back,\u201d she warns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, admitting what you don\u2019t know creates multiple advantages: it builds trust and empowers others to mentor you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Salary Negotiations:\u00a0 Asking For A Raise\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hammer believes in lifting other women up in the workplace, especially when it comes to salary negotiations and asking for a raise.\u00a0 On one occasion, she instructed her lawyer to share her complete compensation package with an underpaid colleague who was facing a major promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most folks may not be lucky enough to have a Bonnie Hammer in their corner during a pay negotiation, she does have some advice she knows to be effective: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u200aDo your homework, get the facts, and then when you go in\u2026 it\u2019s not that you\u2019re asking, it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re asking. Demanding, being entitled. Yelling, being obnoxious, (that\u2019s) not going get you there,\u201d she advises.\u00a0 \u00a0Instead, lean into being confident and asking for what you want in a tone that makes sense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the answer is still no, Hammer has some good follow-up questions to ask on the spot, including: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can we review it another year rather than three years?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I need to do in order to get from here to there?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else do I have to take on as extras to prove my worth?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Bonnie Hammer on Knowing Your WORK Worth\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today\u2019s workplace, there is the notion that some younger workers are eschewing menial work in the name of knowing their own value.\u00a0 But Hammer thinks this is a mistake, drawing an important distinction between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal value<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional value<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re starting out in the work world, you have to prove your (professional) worth.\u201d\u00a0 For her, this means taking on what\u2019s asked with a good attitude, even if it\u2019s \u201cgrunt work.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She took this advice very literally in her own career.\u00a0 In college, she landed an internship on a TV show and was tasked with minding one of the show\u2019s stars: an untrained dog.\u00a0 That included cleaning up after the dog: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literally <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doing \u201ccrappy work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than complaining, she approached the task with enthusiasm. \u201cJust do the job, be noticed,\u201d\u00a0 she advises.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPersonal worth is very important. Everybody has it.
