Crenca is now taking some of that dialogue to the stage to open the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewilburygroup.org\/2025-26.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wilbury Theatre Group's 2025-26 season;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Wilbury Theatre Group&#8217;s 2025-26 season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I am trying, through all of this, to calm myself for what is inevitable. I dream of a peaceful passing, from here to where,&#8221; Crenca said during a telephone interview, quoting from one of his lines in the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/tv\/articles\/rhode-islands-fall-theater-season-090140236.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:&quot;From Here to Where&quot;;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">&#8220;From Here to Where&#8221;<\/a> doesn&#8217;t neatly fit into any theatrical category. It&#8217;s not a musical, but it has music. It&#8217;s not a play, but it has dialogue. Perhaps performance art is the closest label that fits. The description on the Wilbury Theatre Group&#8217;s website describes it this way:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Part lyrical sermon, part political exorcism, and part late-night jam session,\u00a0<em>From Here to Where<\/em>\u00a0is an ensemble-driven living composition that confronts questions of existence, power, and transformation. The basement is a special and gigantic space, originally hosting a bar and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.providenceri.gov\/bocce-chess-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:two bocce courts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">two bocce courts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But it&#8217;s what happens there that led to the creation of &#8220;From Here to Where.&#8221; On Wednesdays, Crenca and his wife, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/motifri.com\/susan-clausens-endangered-species\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Susan Clausen;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Susan Clausen<\/a>, but mostly Clausen, make dinner, and then they free jam with a group of friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a completely free jam,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We go down there, plug in and start playing. I&#8217;ve been doing this kind of thing most of my life, and I love every kind of music there is, and we&#8217;re not interested in cover tunes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For nearly five years, The Gillen Street Ensemble (named after the street Crenca&#8217;s house is on) jammed, and Clausen put down the banjo and &#8220;converted&#8221; to the bass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The coalescing moment was when Crenca asked the Wilbury Theatre Group if he could play for one night as an accompaniment to a month-long show of his paintings <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/waterfire.org\/events\/divine-providence-an-exhibition-by-umberto-crenca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:in October 2023;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">in October 2023<\/a> at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/story\/entertainment\/arts\/2016\/11\/03\/providence-waterfire-to-show-off-nascent-arts-center\/24621942007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:WaterFire Arts Center;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WaterFire Arts Center<\/a>, which shares a building with the Wilbury Theatre Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Crenca is one of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/story\/entertainment\/2015\/10\/18\/as220-alive-still-kicking-at\/33218667007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:founders of AS220;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">founders of AS220<\/a> and was its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/umbertocrenca.com\/bio.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:longtime artistic director;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">longtime artistic director<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wilbury Theatre Group <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewilburygroup.org\/leadership.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Artistic Director;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Artistic Director<\/a> Josh Short said he expected, based on Crenca&#8217;s description of the 2023 show, to see a jazz band concert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;When the show happened, it was much more theatrical than anticipated,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Crenca wore his &#8220;duality costume,&#8221; was handing out cards at the door, and had a phony security guard hanging out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It was old-school energy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It felt like going to a performance art piece.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;I&#8217;ll do you one better&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the show with his exhibit was a great experience, Short said he didn&#8217;t think Crenca wanted to pursue it, or the theater, further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Maybe six months ago, I went back to Josh, and said I&#8217;ve been working on this material, I think I could do a couple of days, and he said, &#8216;I&#8217;ll do you one better: Why don&#8217;t you open my season with a 12-day run and do a piece at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fringepvd.org\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fringe Fest;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fringe Fest<\/a>,&#8217; which we did,&#8221; Crenca said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Short&#8217;s version of events is much the same, but he said he only suggested it being the season opener after going to Crenca&#8217;s study, seeing outlines of the script and watching the ensemble gather, work, dine and jam in Crenca&#8217;s basement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Crenca pulled in some older writings and then wrote new pieces for the new performance, working to create an arc, and the ensemble built music around the pieces, Crenca said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Each performance will be a little bit different. While some of the music is set, much of it will still be improvised. The length of each show will be dictated by how long the jam sessions last during each performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But it&#8217;s not just about Crenca, with choreographed dance, as there are video pieces, some new, some old, playing during the performance.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Bring magic to the theater<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Gillen Street Ensemble represents a place, Crenca&#8217;s basement, just as it represents a sense of time and being, a space where people gather to share, to make art, to argue, to jam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The basement is a special place, Crenca and Short said.
