Nearly two years to the day after Britney Spears<\/strong><\/a> released her memoir, the Princess of Pop\u2019s ex-husband Kevin Federline<\/strong><\/a> is set to publish his own tell-all<\/a> with the fiery title You Thought You Knew<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cKevin spent about three or four years working on the book,\u201d a source exclusively tells Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t an overnight thing that he threw together after Britney came out with her book. He\u2019s never really told his side of the story in depth, and he knows interviews and documentaries can be twisted, so he wanted people to hear it straight from the horse\u2019s mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The synopsis for Federline\u2019s 228-page memoir, which hits stores October 21, teases that the former backup dancer \u201cpeels back the layers of celebrity, fatherhood and survival to reveal the man behind the mythology.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source tells Us<\/em> that You Thought You Knew<\/em> is \u201cprimarily about Kevin\u2019s experience as a father\u201d to his and Spears\u2019 two sons, Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden, 18. (Federline also shares daughter Kori, 23, and son Kaleb, 21, with ex-fianc\u00e9e Shar Jackson<\/strong> as well as daughters Jordan, 14, and Peyton, 11, with wife Victoria Prince<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

The pop star addressed her ups and downs over the years in The Woman in Me, which was released in October 2023. From her public struggles to her controversial 13-year conservatorship, nothing was off [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cKevin gave up a lot to give those boys [Preston and Jayden] a semblance of normalcy, and he\u2019s tried to keep his other kids out of the spotlight too,\u201d the source says. \u201cHe wanted to write the book to shed light on what his life was really like behind the scenes because so many people thought he was a deadbeat and he wasn\u2019t. He really stepped up as a father when he needed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spears, 43, and Federline, 47, infamously went through a high-profile divorce and custody battle from 2006 to 2007, at which time the \u201cToxic\u201d singer also endured a public breakdown. Although Federline ultimately won sole custody of Preston and Jayden, the boys spent much of their childhood with their mother too once she was placed under a conservatorship by her father, Jamie Spears<\/strong>. (A judge terminated the controversial legal arrangement<\/a> in 2021, shortly after Britney accused Jamie, 73, of abusing his control of her personal and financial affairs.)<\/p>\n

The source acknowledges that \u201ca decent chunk\u201d of Federline\u2019s book is about his whirlwind relationship with Britney, from \u201clove at first sight\u201d to \u201cpicking up the pieces after the tumult of their divorce.\u201d He also \u201creflects on the conservatorship years,\u201d according to the source, \u201cand how he thought it was a good thing for Britney and their family even if it was flawed in some ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, a second insider insists to Us<\/em> that Federline \u201cdoesn\u2019t attack Britney or get too personal about her life,\u201d instead focusing on his \u201cdecisions, feelings, overcoming challenges and trying his best to protect those around him while still navigating his life as best as he could.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the timing, the second insider explains, \u201cHis sons are adults now, and it\u2019s when he wanted to release it.\u201d<\/p>\n
