Survivor<\/em><\/a> season 49 contestant Jake Latimer<\/strong> missed out on the birth of his firstborn son to stay on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave [my wife] the option for me to bow out,\u201d Latimer, 36, told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in an interview conducted in April but published on Tuesday, September 9. \u201cI said, \u2018This is our child. You\u2019re here alone.\u2019 She\u2019s Australian, so she doesn\u2019t have anyone up in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

Latimer\u2019s wife apparently had no issues with him continuing to compete on the new season, which is set to premiere later this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe says, \u2018No, you go out. This is your dream, go do it, and whatever money you make is mine,\u2019\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Survivor<\/em> host Jeff Probst<\/strong> was aware of Latimer\u2019s predicament but told EW<\/em> that no special treatment was given because of the contestant\u2019s impending role as a father.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rules on Survivor<\/em> are really pretty clear,\u201d Probst, 63, said in the same April interview. \u201cWhich is no news at all about anything that\u2019s happening in the world, including in your own family. Unless it is an emergency situation. Then, of course, we would tell you and present you with the option that if you want [to] leave the game and go home, you can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Latimer seemed unbothered by the show\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I would love to hear if my baby\u2019s born healthy and stuff like that, but at the same time, they can\u2019t favor me and then not tell other people what\u2019s happening with their families back [at] home,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just going into it as no news is good news.\u201d<\/p>\n

Latimer explained that his wife had \u201cno luck\u201d getting pregnant for more than four years. They \u201cgave up\u201d after finding no answers to their fertility challenges, so he applied for Survivor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I was in the process, she got pregnant and now our firstborn child is going to be born while I\u2019m here on the island,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The baby\u2019s due date was May 11, but Latimer\u2019s son, Jax Paul Kenneth Latimer, came a few days early. Latimer announced in a May 16 Instagram post<\/a> that the baby was born on May 2.<\/p>\n
