Ian McKellen had miss his own movie premiere at a recent film festival because of his health.<\/p>\n
McKellen, 86, did not attend the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a> premiere of his film \u201cThe Christophers\u201d<\/a> on Sunday, Sept. 7.<\/p>\n The movie, directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, follows a forger (Michaela Coel) who was hired by the children of a painter (McKellen) to finish some of his work so they can have a larger inheritance.<\/p>\n In a pre-taped introduction, the Oscar nominee said his \u201cmedical advisers\u201d told him he shouldn\u2019t fly.<\/p>\n \u201cBetter safe than sorry,\u201d McKellen said in the tape, according to Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you enjoy it, will you tell your friends?\u201d McKellen said. \u201cThat\u2019s partly what festivals are about, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n The Emmy winner also noted that the last time he was in Toronto was while shooting \u201cX-Men\u201d in 1999. The action film saw McKellen originate the role of Magneto, a part he will reprise in the upcoming \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d set for release in 2026.<\/p>\n McKellen\u2019s absence comes more than a year after the \u201cLord Of The Rings\u201d star was hospitalized<\/a> after falling off stage while performing his play \u201cPlayer Kings\u201d in London.<\/p>\n McKellen was acting out a battle scene when he lost his footing onstage. He was brought to hospital and the play was canceled, the BBC reported<\/a> at the time. McKellen later told Saga Magazine<\/a> that he had chipped vertebrae and sustained a fractured wrist.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was horrible,\u201d The Tony winner said while explaining how his foot got stuck in a chair and fell while trying to shake it off.<\/p>\n \u201cThe more I tried to get rid of it, the faster I proceeded down a step, onto the forestage, and then on to the lap of someone in the front row,\u201d McKellen recalled. \u201cI was hoping to be able to rejoin the play on the tour, but I couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n During her appearance at the festival, Coel said she loved working with McKellen on \u201cThe Christophers\u201d and called him a \u201chero.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s just the loveliest soul,\u201d Coel said, per Variety. \u201cHe just had an upward spirit\u2026I loved the idea of a character like Ian McKellen and me coming together and like loving each other.\u201d<\/p>\n Read the original article on MassLive<\/a>.
