\n\tTwo months before the anticipated sequel Wicked: For Good<\/em> hits theaters on Nov. 21, director Jon M. Chu is giving a preview of two new songs from composer Stephen Schwartz illustrating the tale of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo<\/a>) and Glinda (Ariana Grande<\/a>).<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThey\u2019re questioning, \u2018What is home? And what happens when you are fighting for a home that you realize doesn\u2019t even want you there, or was never meant for you? Do you defend it? Do you fight for it? Does anyone else think of home the same as you?’\u201d Chu told EW<\/a><\/em> about the follow-up to the top-grossing film<\/a> based on a Broadway musical ever.\u00a0\u201cThose questions are very interesting and relevant to Elphaba\u2019s journey.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tChu said one of those questions for Glinda the Good is what is her definition of home? \u201cGlinda is the one that has to ultimately pop her own bubble,\u201d Chu said. \u201cShe has to leave her privilege to actually see other people\u2019s struggles and fight for justice and equality.\u201d <\/p>\n \n\tChu warned fans of the original that grossed more than $750 million internationally not to look for \u201ccontemporary commentary\u201d in Schwartz\u2019s new compositions, describing them as doing what all good \u201ctimeless\u201d tales do: \u201cThey ask us elemental questions of being human, not just the great parts \u2014 the celebratory, joyful parts of being human \u2014 but the scary, dark parts that test us. Everybody thinks it\u2019s about this time, and yet it\u2019s about all time. We are a little bit good and we all are a little bit wicked, and how do we navigate that?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tWhile the original landed best actress and best actress in a supporting role nods for Erivo and Grande, respectively, as well as best original score, Chu said the new songs are not a mere bid to go after more Oscar love, but emotionally key to the second film\u2019s story. \u201cEven after we recorded them, even after we put them in the movie, we kicked the tires on them to make sure that we had to put them in this movie,\u201d he said of the unnamed tracks. \u201cOtherwise, it wasn\u2019t worth it.\u201d <\/p>\n \n\tWith \u201chome\u201d being such a key factor in the entire extended Oz<\/em> universe, Chu revealed that the songs amplify that idea with both witches searching for their way home. \u201cBoth of these songs are about how to do that, and it\u2019s questions that I\u2019ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to,\u201d he said. \u201cWe get to take our time and explore those questions.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tChu also shared some key story lines of the sequel, revealing that the two witches are reunited sooner than in the Wicked<\/em> musical, with Erivo and Grande sharing more scenes together after he realized \u201c\u2018It\u2019s the girls, stupid!\u2019 So, when one\u2019s going through something, there\u2019s something that they\u2019ve learned from the other that affects them, or the fact the other person is not there is part of what can\u2019t get them to their goal. It\u2019s always about them.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tPart 2 is expected to feature some of the fan favorites from the original 2003 Broadway musical, including \u201cNo Good Deed Goes Unpunished\u201d and the tear-jerking Elphaba-Glinda duet \u201cFor Good.\u201d Erivo teased the new songs<\/a> in a December interview, saying that she worked with Schwartz on crafting an original Elphaba track. \u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019re ready for it,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, I love the song and I remember when we filmed it, the cast and crew were crying. I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s just because they were emotional that day or that\u2019s what the song does.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tIn the sequel, Glinda is no longer a student and has started working for the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), who employs a large staff \u201cand a lot of infrastructure\u201d to promote her goodness, with help from a team that includes Pfannee (SNL<\/em>\u2018s Bowen Yang) and Shenshen (Bronwyn James).<\/p>\n \n\tWhile the misunderstood Elphaba defied gravity at the end of the first film, Chu said that, \u201cif you think she flew in the first movie, she flies\u201d this time for real, but with consequences for the witch who fights for animal rights. \u201cShe\u2019s now surrendered to who she is. Is it a blossoming? Absolutely,\u201d Chu said. \u201cBut she did not realize how lonely it would be to become who you are meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
