As anticipation builds for\u00a0Wicked: For Good<\/em>, the second act to 2024\u2019s Oscar-winning Wicked<\/em>, director Jon M. Chu has revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a> that the upcoming film will feature not one, but two new bespoke songs\u2014that\u2019s one tune for each witch.<\/p>\n While Chu didn\u2019t announce the songs\u2019 titles, the outlet teased that the new tracks by\u00a0composer <\/span>Stephen Schwartz are no \u201cmere bids for a Best Original Song nomination.\u201d In fact, Chu says the new songs are deeply needed additions to build out the film, which is based on the stage play\u2019s \u201cnotoriously rushed and nowhere near as well-regarded\u201d second act.<\/p>\n \u201cEven after we recorded them,\u201d Chu says, \u201ceven after we put them in the movie, we kicked the tires on them to make sure that we had to put them in this movie. Otherwise, it wasn\u2019t worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n And just as Glinda and Elphaba are two sides of the same coin, both the songs share themes\u2014albeit from different points of view.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re questioning, \u2018What is home? And what happens when you are fighting for a home that you realize doesn\u2019t even want you there, or was never meant for you? Do you defend it? Do you fight for it? Does anyone else think of home the same as you?\u2019. Those questions are very interesting and relevant to Elphaba\u2019s journey,\u201d Chu said.<\/p>\n And as Glinda begins to interrogate her own decisions and worldview, the \u201cgood witch\u201d comes to realize she may be in the wrong, Chu added. \u201cGlinda is the one to ultimately pop her own bubble,\u201d the director said. \u201cShe has to leave her privilege to actually see other people\u2019s struggles and fight for justice and equality.\u201d<\/p>\n While these themes might seem to share, uh, certain similarities with current world events, Chu was more diplomatic, suggesting instead that the themes of the songs are \u201ctimeless.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey do what timeless stories do! They ask us elemental questions of being human, not just the great parts\u2014the celebratory, joyful parts of being human \u2014 but the scary, dark parts that test us. Everybody thinks it\u2019s about this time, and yet it\u2019s about all time. We are a little bit good and we all are a little bit wicked, and how do we navigate that?\u201d<\/p>\n As Chu points out, both Glinda and Elphaba have a right to defend themselves and their world in their own way. \u201cBoth witches are trying to find their way home. Both of these songs are about how to do that, and it\u2019s questions that I\u2019ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to.
