New movie will include two original songs<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
\n\tWhen Wicked: For Good<\/a><\/em> arrives in theaters later this year, Ariana Grande<\/a>\u2018s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo<\/a>\u2018s Elphaba will face hard truths through new songs. Stephen Schwartz composed two new songs for the film, but director Jon Chu assures moviegoers with a particular attachment to the original soundtrack that they wouldn\u2019t have added them if they weren\u2019t essential. \u201cEven after we recorded them, even after we put them in the movie,\u201d he told EW<\/a>, \u201cwe kicked the tires on them to make sure that we had to put them in this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tWhile the song titles have not been revealed, Chu shared details about how they assist in moving the story forward. \u201cThey\u2019re questioning, \u2018What is home? And what happens when you are fighting for a home that you realize doesn\u2019t even want you there, or was never meant for you? Do you defend it? Do you fight for it? Does anyone else think of home the same as you?’\u201d he said. Wicked<\/a> <\/em>concluded with Elphaba taking off toward the west following an explosive performance of \u201cDefying Gravity,\u201d leaving Glinda behind.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cGlinda is the one that has to ultimately pop her own bubble,\u201d Chu said. \u201cShe has to leave her privilege to actually see other people\u2019s struggles and fight for justice and equality.\u201d Both characters are looking for answers and understanding. For the director, it\u2019s a similar experience to what he felt watching the original production. \u201cBoth of these songs are about how to do that, and it\u2019s questions that I\u2019ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to,\u201d he said. \u201cWe get to take our time and explore those questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
