Prince\u00a0Harry\u00a0had tea with\u00a0King Charles on Wednesday\u00a0at\u00a0their first meeting in 20 months, in what may prove\u00a0a first step toward ending a much-publicized rift between father and son.<\/p>\n

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, last saw his father in February\u00a02024,\u00a0shortly after it was announced that\u00a0the King\u00a0was undergoing treatment for an unspecified form of cancer.<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles, 76, had a private tea at Clarence House in London with his son on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Harry, 40, flew into Britain on Monday for a series of engagements, and earlier on Wednesday\u00a0visited\u00a0a research centre that\u00a0specializes in improving treatment for victims with blast injuries.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0Harry\u00a0and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, moved to California in 2020 where they now live with their two children, they have been highly critical of the Royal Family and the institution in interviews, TV documentaries and\u00a0Harry’s autobiography, Spare.<\/em><\/p>\n

Harry\u00a0had some particularly barbed comments for Charles and his elder brother, heir-to-the-throne\u00a0Prince\u00a0William.<\/p>\n

But after losing a\u00a0legal battle\u00a0with the British government over his security in May,\u00a0Harry\u00a0said he wanted a rapprochement.<\/p>\n

“Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course they will never forgive me for lots of things. But you know … I would love reconciliation with my family…. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore. And life is precious,” he told the BBC.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile.”<\/p>\n

‘A lot of anguish’<\/h2>\n

Both Buckingham Palace and\u00a0Harry’s representatives had been tight-lipped\u00a0ahead of the\u00a0prince’s visit to Britain\u00a0about whether there would be a meeting\u00a0with the king.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0Charles’s communications chief and\u00a0Harry’s media representatives were pictured in July at a meeting in London in what newspapers suggested might be the first steps toward\u00a0a reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Historian and author Anthony Seldon said mending their relationship was important for the monarchy and for both Charles and\u00a0Harry\u00a0as individuals.<\/p>\n

“The King is the King, but he’s also a human being and a loving father,” Seldon told Reuters.<\/p>\n

“I think the rift will have caused both of them a lot of anguish. So if that can be healed, at least in part, now or subsequently, then that’s all to the good.”<\/p>\n
