Clint, 95, was not there in person for the \u201cvery emotional\u201d day, but provided his support for Charlie over the phone instead.<\/p>\n

Charlie admitted he was trying to \u201chatch a plan to get away\u201d when Martin told him, \u201cThere\u2019s someone on the phone who wants to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained how Clint said in his \u201cvery recognizable, very globally familiar voice,\u201d that he was \u201cworth saving.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair had starred together in The Rookie, and Oscar winner Clint told him, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to get the train back on the tracks, kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie recalled, \u201cIt was really powerful. I thanked him, gave the phone back to Dad and said, \u2018All right, let\u2019s go.’\u201d<\/p>\n

In the book, Charlie describes how he was \u201csloppy\u201d on set with Clint after partying with Nicolas Cage and three other friends, a group known as J-5.<\/p>\n

Both in the book and the docuseries, Charlie candidly open up about his past drug and alcohol addiction and his subsequent sobriety, which has seen him clean for the last seven years.<\/p>\n

A pivotal moment for the change came in 2017 when his daughter Sami had to be driven by his friend because he was too drunk and three whiskey-laced coffees deep.<\/p>\n

He wrote, “Sam was very quiet. I didn\u2019t need to be clairvoyant to know exactly what she was thinking. Why is Dad not driving \u2014 again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie drank three beers and took two Valiums the next day and after that decided to get sober.<\/p>\n

Charlie – who is also dad to Cassandra, 40, daughter Lola, 20, and twin sons Bob and Max, 16 – wrote that Sami, 21, was not the \u201cfinal straw\u201d but \u201cfirst harvest.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
