{"id":2014433,"date":"2025-09-11T15:36:55","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T15:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2014433"},"modified":"2025-09-11T15:36:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T15:36:55","slug":"beloved-harrisburg-institution-celebrates-100-years-it-just-needs-to-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/beloved-harrisburg-institution-celebrates-100-years-it-just-needs-to-exist\/","title":{"rendered":"Beloved Harrisburg institution celebrates 100 years: \u2018It just needs to exist\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V64KKZPBDNEQ5FMAZ3IWS5V3YI\">One of the centers of the Harrisburg community\u2019s arts and culture is celebrating a milestone that has been a century in the making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2AKV6OANGZB7NIOUOH5WOUHOLA\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/\">Theatre Harrisburg<\/a>, the city\u2019s community theater organization, is about to open the first show of its 100th season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HCOIGL3Q7NCO5LCVACDXL63LKI\">Run by a small full-time staff, Theatre Harrisburg produces plays and musicals with casts of volunteer artists from across the community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IRD6LEEYBVEHRNI5TYTWYADFLI\">In any given show, you may find some cast members who have studied acting or worked professionally, and others for whom it may be their first time ever on a stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O5NLFHRO75GL5HJIZYH5L56TG4\">And according to Lorien Reese Mahay, executive director of Theatre Harrisburg, the staff and artists working there today are driven by the same passions for community and performance as those who founded the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L6FGKU4BLBCAVK6UWJKGZHO7WI\">\u201cI feel like you can feel the love for this organization throughout all of this time,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cI have playbills [programs from past play productions] going back to 1927. Someone took the time to take the playbills from throughout decades, and bind them into a book. All of these little decisions [show that] people really loved this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KN5MMKZXSRGUTHP7YMKPE4EDZA\">It\u2019s a sign of the commitment that has continued to keep Theatre Harrisburg running, Mahay said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KB2QCQCQMFGR7NAOC5ZPCD3XQE\">\u201cIt mattered so much to this community, and continues to matter,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>Humble beginnings <\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NSZFDEI56JA7BIJFYWWJKFVBVI\">The origins of the group stem from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/little-theatre-American-theatrical-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/little-theatre-American-theatrical-movement\">the Little Theatre Movement<\/a>, where communities across the country began developing theaters that were independent from the large commercial theaters and opera houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5RRG6QS7ZRCF3L5GWDWXDORSRI\">\u201cThe idea really was that each community could have this community-led theater,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of anti-commercial, if you will. It was really focusing on the fact that art doesn\u2019t always have to make money in order for it to be important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K23IB2B4SBEBBI626LEG7MBNZI\">And in Harrisburg specifically, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/m.asp?m=6748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/m.asp?m=6748\">city\u2019s Grand Opera House<\/a> had <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/life\/2016\/01\/vintage_photos_of_the_1907_gra.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/life\/2016\/01\/vintage_photos_of_the_1907_gra.html\">burned down in 1907<\/a>, which had left a void for the performing arts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CZNS2KULDFH5TMYYB4BFPT7ZPE\">And after some meetings in the city\u2019s public library, the original organizers began to plan out how they would put on performances of their own. Thus, the Harrisburg Community Theatre was born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MGIDNTMHDZBRLD5M6765HA5ZCM\">\u201cThe short version of it: there were a group of women that came together to ask themselves the question of, \u2018What if Harrisburg had a theater?\u2019\u201d Mahay said. \u201cSo we really started our existence with this idea [that this] could this be something that we could bring into our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5H62LSAYSNHTBLISDXJUIXFVGM\">The idea was that \u201cit doesn\u2019t have to be perfect,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cIt just needs to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>Over the decades<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MU7IRHDJVJF73PDJGAN5DHYYTE\">Between 1926 and 1932, the Harrisburg Community Theatre performed \u201call over the city, wherever we could,\u201d Mahay said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IPHN5SETTBDBTDSWWWBEF6NLNU\">Venues included several that are no longer around today, like the downtown Majestic Theatre, the old City Hall on Walnut Street, or the William Penn High School. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VMGOFCG5FBCIZOJ5B374GPVAWE\">In 1932, the Harrisburg Community Theatre began performing at the Jewish Community Center on North Third Street, where they would remain until they broke ground for their own permanent home on Hurlock Street in 1950.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YIBXR4VVJBCDFJHQ57MJFBEDUE\">Over the decades, the growing company was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Theatre_Project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Theatre_Project\">bolstered by the Federal Theatre Project<\/a> in the 1930s, part of the New Deal funding to support the arts during the Great Depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GT6YN6C2EZEOFB2YSMOGXLSS4A\">And those decades also brought plenty of their own challenges and memorable moments \u2014 moments that Mahay said really root the company to the city\u2019s history, and the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VD5XXIQ535ANHLHUJ5EKIZEZ5M\">\u201cThere\u2019s all of this history, where it was like, \u2018Theatre Harrisburg was helping with the war effort by auctioning off Marilyn Monroe\u2019s gloves or something,\u201d Mahay laughed. \u201cThere was this one article that talked about this outbreak of smallpox. [The cast and crew] went out of the theater and burned all of the costumes, but the show went on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IZD2ZW2UE5DWFJOGF3HJCMLBMU\">At the turn of the century, Harrisburg Community Theatre signed on to become one of the resident companies of Harrisburg\u2019s Whitaker Center, which opened in 1999. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FAVWAHWK7RFP7FIKLKPN4RJMUI\">While larger shows continue to be staged at Whitaker Center each season, Theatre Harrisburg has also brought performances back to the Hurlock building. It was dubbed the Krevsky Center in 1999, in honor of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2015\/09\/90_years_of_theatre_harrisburg_2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2015\/09\/90_years_of_theatre_harrisburg_2.html\">Jay and Nancy Krevsky<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2015\/09\/90_years_of_theatre_harrisburg_2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2015\/09\/90_years_of_theatre_harrisburg_2.html\">, actors, volunteers, donors and longtime pillars of the arts community.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LUJ4B5YF3VFP7LI56NPND2U3BI\">That year also brought with it a name change for the organization: Harrisburg Community Theatre officially became known as Theatre Harrisburg. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BGWSEIWBHJBCDOVOIYYQKPYX4Y\">Mahay said that some of the group\u2019s veterans still refer to the company as \u201cHTC.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6CSJCXCTJFFOPLHET4FMSKBRUA\">\u201cSome people just refuse,\u201d she said. \u201cSome people on my board still call us HCT! And I love that. I am proud of [the name] Theatre Harrisburg and I love Theatre Harrisburg. But it needs to be rooted in both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4YO75K6R6FFMHEMHTH5BAUDUEE\">And in recent years, the organization has found new ways to reach the community it was founded to serve. In 2024, Theatre Harrisburg collaborated with Sankofa African American Theatre Company to produce the play \u201cIntimate Apparel,\u201d and they have joined <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/08\/harrisburg-theater-program-for-kids-with-special-needs-to-stage-broadway-classic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/08\/harrisburg-theater-program-for-kids-with-special-needs-to-stage-broadway-classic.html\">the Penguin Project to produce plays for children with special needs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>Theatre Harrisburg today<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R54NNRPZ7VB47P2AFGMP4F6YQU\">Preparing to celebrate an organization\u2019s major anniversary can be a challenge. And especially when you\u2019re celebrating a century of work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FMRDL2KKNJGU7LNKYL6PELHORU\">Mahay said that \u201cno matter how much you\u2019ve prepared, you\u2019re still never quite prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5Q73DSM5YZFYRLFXKJFFEIGKAU\">\u201cThere\u2019s so much history to to take into consideration,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cYou want so badly to not only really honor all the people and all the things that the organization has represented, especially when you have a community organization. But then also you want to sort of set forward some some new pieces, and try to help people to learn more about who you are as an organization today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E34XQRUDYJF7FPSFCL4WEKMWIM\">Mahay has only been with the organization for 4 of those 100 years. She applied for the position after traveling through Harrisburg with her family by chance, and falling in love with the city on a brief visit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DHPL2I5D4RFARIH6O3O2YO6RRQ\">She brought with her an MFA in Dramaturgy and years of experience in nonprofit arts management, along with a healthy respect for the legacy she\u2019s inherited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FGNYASFEPVEUJNRTMXRFIZPEJA\">And fortunately, she says, the local theater community remains as invested in the organization as it was when it was founded. Mahay noted that numerous volunteers, staff and board members helped with the massive anniversary celebration, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/2008\/04\/artistic_director_leaves_theat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/2008\/04\/artistic_director_leaves_theat.html\">veteran director Tom Hostetter<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/2008\/04\/witf_honors_one_of_its_own_mik.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/2008\/04\/witf_honors_one_of_its_own_mik.html\">board member Mike Greenwalt<\/a>, and Jay and Nancy Krevsky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5JY2B3EVO5BZTG4ST3PXUQGUJQ\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/news\/2025\/08\/beloved-harrisburg-arts-benefactor-dies-a-larger-than-life-spirit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/news\/2025\/08\/beloved-harrisburg-arts-benefactor-dies-a-larger-than-life-spirit.html\">Jay Krevsky passed away in August<\/a>, weeks before the start of the 100th anniversary season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XQVTCZVRKNCODKYXNKGKURA44Y\">\u201cI think what was really hard for me was knowing that we\u2019re going to be opening season 100 without Jay,\u201d Lorien said. \u201cSince I came to this place, Jay and Nancy really took me under their wing right away. They are the most gracious and lovely and warm people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UDK6KPNCZBGHNDRR45OBI4UQXE\">Mahay said that Jay always led the annual Angel Campaign fundraiser, and for many years, he would write a personalized, handwritten note to each person on the mailing list. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"US6F2Y6TCJDKVFFM2RG2OPMVEY\">And those notes would always mention something like \u201cwith your help, we\u2019ll make it to 100,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HR5SWUHS5BB7ZI4C6TY2L6CEDU\">\u201cWe made it through one more [campaign] with him,\u201d Mahay said. \u201dHe was so proud, and so unashamed, of really advocating for this place. And that that love showed through.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>The 100th anniversary season<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LG7SBOQEJNAHJB5LOAZLYS2VTQ\">The upcoming season is \u201can exciting, celebratory year,\u201d Mahay said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ILQXQXLCMND3JIRGU3WUESJO5E\">The first production is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/a-gentlemans-guide-to-love-and-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/a-gentlemans-guide-to-love-and-murder\/\">\u201cA Gentleman\u2019s Guide to Love and Murder.\u201d<\/a><b> <\/b>The musical comedy opens Sept. 12 and runs through Sept. 21 at the Krevsky Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QUDKGQITI5G2BIKRYRIYHE27BY\">The production is directed by Tom Hostetter, who led Theatre Harrisburg for 28 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QPETLSJ5WFFEBM6FLKZACHMBUY\">\u201cHe was our artistic director for over a quarter of the life of the theatre itself,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cAnd [veteran costume designer] Paul [Foltz] came back for as well, even though he\u2019s retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5PD5P7DPVBEHXMVRURSJS6SZXE\">On Oct. 4, Theatre Harrisburg will present a reading of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/other-events-23-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/other-events-23-24\/\">\u201cThe Dover Road,\u201d <\/a>by A.A. Milne, famed author of the Winnie the Pooh stories. The play was the first show ever produced by the Harrisburg Community Theatre, Mahay said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SQN3NACAIZALVFTBQ3MRCLNUIY\">Next is the golden age musical <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/guys-and-dolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/guys-and-dolls\/\">\u201cGuys &amp; Dolls,\u201d<\/a> held at the Whitaker Center from Nov. 14-23. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G2S7F7Z33FGXHDJ75RX6GCI4C4\">\u201cI knew we had to do \u2018Guys &amp; Dolls\u2019 way before the season ever started,\u201d Mahay said. \u201cAnd in part, it\u2019s because it\u2019s the first musical our theater ever produced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DYARZDFAMFFVJBEKNHD3I4YIOI\">This year will also see the return of a Theatre Harrisburg Christmas tradition, with the staged reading of the radio play <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/other-events-23-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/other-events-23-24\/\">\u201cMerry Christmas, George Bailey\u201d <\/a>from Dec. 12-14. The show is an adaptation of the screenplay of the beloved holiday film \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z4P47N25QZBR7OUF7H7ASWQE6U\">Then <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/the-last-five-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/the-last-five-years\/\">\u201cThe Last Five Years\u201d<\/a> will be held from Feb. 6-15 at the Krevsky Center. The intimate musical has a cast of only two people, and tells the story of a couple from opposite perspectives: Jamie starts at the beginning of their relationship, and Cathy from its end. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TGNUGZEGPRB7NB6EQERWHL2XAA\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/godspell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/godspell\/\">\u201cGodspell\u201d<\/a> will be held at the Krevsky Center from April 24-May 10. The musical is a retelling of the Gospel stories, with songs and vignettes inspired by the stories of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N76GRJWSQVBGNMBCDT3EADOOCE\">A special concert production of the musical \u201cFollies\u201d will be held at The Forum in Harrisburg on May 31 and June 1, in a joint production together with another Harrisburg arts institution, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/harrisburgsymphony.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/harrisburgsymphony.org\/\">Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UYMTSGMFUJB5PKU3Y6XQVQS6JU\">The season closes with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/i-love-you-youre-perfect-now-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/i-love-you-youre-perfect-now-change\/\">\u201cI Love You, You\u2019re Perfect, Now Change,\u201d <\/a>which Mahay calls a \u201cwonderful, funny, charming musical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VA3PL3IJINHG7DGMMADYKNGLHE\">\u201cIt also just seemed honestly like it would be kind of fun to end the season with this statement of: this has been amazing,\u201d she said. \u201cEverything is great, and now, also it\u2019s time for us to actually look forward as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NH27DRVOYVAGXC5K6IWXZOJYXY\">For more information about the season, including ticket info and show dates, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/theatreharrisburg.com\/\">visit the Theatre Harrisburg website.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>What\u2019s coming next<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BGM47CWF2VCFPPVDRSTFIS4A4Y\">But planning for the future doesn\u2019t end with the 100th season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HAJJJTSJZRHZNLZ7Z7IVXEVKPQ\">Despite being executive director, Mahay said that \u201cI don\u2019t feel like it\u2019s my job to put my stamp on this place.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6TVINCBJXFBNJJHYRCLUYLERPM\">\u201cI feel like it\u2019s my job to help safeguard the legacy of the organization, and make sure that this place has its own distinct voice to carry forward,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t belong to me just because I\u2019m running it. It\u2019s a community organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GTVKPGTME5DWVOCSJYMKZ4BRG4\">The goal, she said, it to be \u201cnimble enough, and tuned in enough, to try and be really what the community needs us to be, while also recognizing that we have a lot of history to sort of safeguard and ensure that it\u2019s remembered as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G2TO26V5NBD3BMC7U2YAA7X7NE\">\u201cWe had four generations of Krevskys,\u201d Mahay said. \u201c[Board member and actor] Mike [Greenwalt] talks about how when he started as a volunteer, he was in high school. When we did [Harrisburg playwright] Paul Hood\u2019s play \u2018Pieces\u2019 here, he was like, \u2018This has always been my dream, ever since I was a kid, to be on this stage and have my work heard by this community.
