The biggest liberty Watson<\/a><\/em>\u2018s first season took with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s original Sherlock Holmes<\/em> stories was resurrecting the villainous Moriarty (Randall Park<\/a>) after he and Holmes both tumbled into the rushing waters of Reichenbach Falls. That set up the season-long cat and mouse games between Moriarty, Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut<\/a>), and the medical team of the Holmes Clinic in Pittsburgh. Watson, Holmes\u2019 partner-in-crime solving, was left with a hole in his heart after Holmes\u2019 presumed drowning but eventually won a kind of revenge by hastening Moriarty\u2019s death by pathogen in the season finale.<\/p>\n \u201cWatson is definitely a different person as a result of that life-altering event,\u201d says Chestnut, about breaking the Hippocratic Oath by killing a patient \u2014 albeit an evil one. \u201cWe\u2019ll see throughout the course of the season how and if he comes to terms with that.\u201d As part of coping with Moriarty\u2019s death, Watson early on destroys the collected database at the Holmes Clinic that Moriarty had stolen for ill use, deciding to cut his edgy research in favor of patient care.<\/p>\n A new game, however, is afoot when Watson gets another<\/em> very unexpected guest in the second season. This time hewing more closely to Conan Doyle\u2019s later Sherlock<\/em> stories, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Carlyle<\/a>, Trainspotting<\/a><\/em>, The Full Monty<\/em><\/a>) comes back from the dead, so to speak, and walks into the clinic named by Watson after his beloved mentor.<\/p>\n Watson may be relieved to find the world\u2019s greatest detective alive, but there are lots of questions. The deep friendship they shared, says Chestnut, \u201cis a work in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s clear that Holmes, who will recur this season, \u201cvery much has his own agenda,\u201d Craig Sweeny<\/a>, the series\u2019 creator and showrunner shares. Whatever that scheme is, \u201cit keeps him dropping in and out of Watson\u2019s life in Pittsburgh,\u201d he adds. \u201cHolmes doesn\u2019t share [everything] with Watson at first, and the parts he does share leaves Watson a little unsettled.\u201d<\/p>\n Another Conan Doyle dynamic has changed: Their relationship is more equal. Watson is now an acclaimed medical detective in his own right. \u201cMorris is so commanding in the role of Watson that I stopped worrying about the character sharing the spotlight with Sherlock Holmes,\u201d Sweeny notes. How each of the men will deal with that has yet to be seen. Adding to any tension on hand, another Holmes appears: Sherlock\u2019s older brother Mycroft (Vincent Gale) pops up this season in what Sweeny says \u201cis his usual adversarial role.\u201d Don\u2019t fear, far worse antagonists will appear.<\/p>\n In good news, though, the long separation won\u2019t destroy the Holmes and Watson working relationship, Sweeny promises: \u201cThe two love to collaborate, and Watson often can\u2019t resist bouncing ideas off his former partner.\u201d<\/p>\n Everything isn\u2019t copasetic in Watson\u2019s clinic, however. Watson\u2019s brilliant team of fellows \u201c[feel] suddenly cut out at key moments of cases,\u201d Sweeny reveals, \u201cbut they are maturing as young doctors and [medical] detectives, and you will see growth professionally and personally.\u201d<\/p>\n The three remaining researchers are indeed evolving. Squabbling twins Adam and Stephens Croft (both played by Peter Mark Kendall<\/a>) are finally friends again after surviving a near-fatal Moriarty-fueled infection. Stephens is finally dating their colleague, Dr. Sasha Lubbock (Inga Schlingmann<\/a>), and has seemingly forgiven Adam for dating Lauren (Amanda Crew<\/a>), Stephens\u2019 former girlfriend.<\/p>\n
