In its season three finale, <em>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/em> managed to undo all that and has now completed transitioning his franchise into a series of flailing emotions and empty nonsense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The episode, titled \u201cNew Life and New Civilizations,\u201d pulls together breadcrumbs scattered throughout season 3 into a plot involving end-of-the-universe stuff. I\u2019d explain it, but I can\u2019t, since the show doesn\u2019t. It\u2019s all about the vibe of bad things happening. Feels good.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">None of it makes any sense, and that\u2019s the way <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/star-trek\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Star Trek;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Star Trek<\/a>: Strange New Worlds<\/em> wants it. The show seems to be avowedly against reason and common sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So the <em>Strange New Worlds\u2019s<\/em> overstuffed cast of characters goes to work on the feelings they\u2019ve all had about the developing situation. Why does she have to become a statue? No one knows, but she feels it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Then Captain Patel vanishes, sort of, but it\u2019s not clear why. The bad guys, the Vezda, are defeated, though it\u2019s also unclear why that happens or even who they are or why they are bad. The show doesn\u2019t seem to care. This is a clear reference to <em>Doctor Who<\/em>, and the second time <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> has tried to integrate the universe of that other <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/category\/ent\/scifi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:sci-fi;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">sci-fi<\/a> franchise into its own. That\u2019s what <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> is doing too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As bad as Star Trek has been in the past few years, this <em>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/em> season 3 finale is a real low point. Not only because its one of the worst episodes Star Trek has ever produced, but because of the season of terrible writing that went before it, and because of what this means about the show\u2019s plans for the future. None of those plans are good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When <em>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/em> first launched, it seemed like a hopeful course correction for a franchise in trouble. That hope is over. I\u2019ve been a Star Trek fan my entire life. I\u2019ve watched every season of every series, even truly terrible ones like <em>Star Trek: Picard<\/em> season 2 and every episode of <em>Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>.
