Prince Harry made an\u00a0unannounced visit to\u00a0Kyiv this week, pledging to\u00a0support the recovery of\u00a0thousands of\u00a0Ukrainians wounded in\u00a0Russia\u2019s full-scale war, The Guardian<\/em> reported on\u00a0September\u00a012.<\/p>\n

The Duke of\u00a0Sussex traveled<\/a> to\u00a0Ukraine with a\u00a0team from his Invictus Games Foundation, saying he\u00a0wanted to\u00a0do\u00a0\u201ceverything possible\u201d to\u00a0aid the rehabilitation of\u00a0injured service members. The group is\u00a0expected to\u00a0announce new initiatives aimed at\u00a0expanding support across the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0cannot stop the war, but what we\u00a0can do\u00a0is\u00a0do\u00a0everything we\u00a0can to\u00a0help the recovery process,\u201d Harry told The Guardian while traveling overnight by\u00a0train to\u00a0the Ukrainian capital.<\/p>\n

The prince said his visit came after a\u00a0chance encounter in\u00a0New York with Olga Rudnieva, CEO of\u00a0the Superhumans Trauma Centre in\u00a0Lviv, which treats amputees and other severely wounded soldiers. He\u00a0first toured the center in\u00a0April.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has competed in\u00a0the Invictus Games since 2017, but its role in\u00a0the competition\u2014founded by\u00a0Harry in\u00a02014\u00a0for wounded veterans\u2014has grown significantly since the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n

Recalling the Games in\u00a0The Hague two years ago, the prince said: \u201cIt\u00a0was remarkable. Every one of\u00a0the participants had a\u00a0journey to\u00a0get to\u00a0those games, but nobody from any of\u00a0the other competing nations was going back to\u00a0war. That is\u00a0why the Ukrainians stood\u00a0out. Everyone felt an\u00a0immense connection to\u00a0them. Some of\u00a0the competitors were being pulled off the battlefield and were going back to\u00a0the battlefield. It\u00a0means so\u00a0much to\u00a0us, because it\u00a0means so\u00a0much to\u00a0them.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his stay in\u00a0Kyiv, Harry is\u00a0scheduled to\u00a0visit the National Museum of\u00a0the History of\u00a0Ukraine in\u00a0the Second World War, meet with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and spend time with some 200\u00a0veterans.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced<\/a> the opening of\u00a0the new prosthetics center \u201cHuman Titans\u201d, based at\u00a0one of\u00a0the city hospitals. The center will provide modern prosthetics and rehabilitation for wounded soldiers and civilians.<\/p>\n
