Photo from the UP College of Mass Communication<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsang platitong mani (A plate of peanuts),\u201d is just one of the memorable phrases that\u2019s familiar to Filipinos in the \u201980s and \u201990s, all because of Mongolian Barbecue star Mr. Shooli \u2014 the genius who kept everyone in stitches amid the uncertain political times.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel \u201cJun\u201d Urbano Jr. was a comedian, filmmaker, actor, and director who created the well known television character of Mr. Shooli, a Mongolian national with a Chinese accent who commentates on the state of Philippine politics. <\/p>\n<p>As Mr. Shooli, Urbano managed to toe the line between serious discussion and playful yet non-offensive banter between him and the guests that he invited. <\/p>\n<p>HIs gags, often guised as somewhat innocent statements on Philippine politics, caught the likes of former presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo off guard with his charm. Courtesy of WordPress user cbholganza.<\/p>\n<p>Just months before <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/entertainment\/celebrities\/jun-ubano-mr-shooli-dies-84\/\">his death<\/a> in December 2023, Urbano was honored in August with the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/entertainment\/movies\/full-list-nominees-2023-famas-awards\/\">Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Dr. Jose R. Perez Memorial Award<\/a> for his contributions to Philippine cinema.<\/p>\n<p>In October of the same year, the 84-year-old Urbano was bestowed with the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/up.edu.ph\/satirist-manuel-urbano-jr-a-k-a-mr-shooli-is-up-gawad-plaridel-awardee\/\">Gawad Plaridel award<\/a> from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication. His famed alter ego Mr. Shooli gave the acceptance speech, and of course, wouldn\u2019t be without a quip:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoong araw, \u2018pag ikaw may problema, sisigaw ka, \u2018Tulong, pulis! Tulong, pulis!\u2019 Ngayon \u2018pag may problema ka, ikaw sisigaw, \u2018Tulong, may pulis, may pulis!\u2019\u201d\u00a0he joked, drawing laughs from the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>(Back in the day, when you had a problem, you would shout, \u2018Police, help! Police, help!\u2019 Now, if you have a problem, you would instead shout, \u2018Help, there\u2019s a cop, there\u2019s a cop!)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSineHub%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0xESBrKvYfyAqAb2Nj3Y4xzdJSm5HRhbbc7b7E629dga7qKpMLpWgjwi1hViDJGsLl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=350\" width=\"350\" height=\"793\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think that the Cory Aquino administration would be safe from social commentary as she\u2019s the first female president who inspired a people\u2019s revolution, but well, there was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3EKNR3trDJs\">Sic O\u2019Clock News<\/a> on television.<\/p>\n<p>Sic O\u2019Clock News was a political satire show that ran from January 1987 to September 1990 via the Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC).<\/p>\n<p>Directed by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rappler.com\/entertainment\/13839-marilou-diaz-abaya-is-dead-at-57\/\">Marilou Diaz-Abaya<\/a>, the show featured an ensemble cast led by Jaime Fabregas, Ces Quesada, and Manny Casta\u00f1eda and discussed pressing issues during Aquino\u2019s term. <\/p>\n<p>Long before social media memes about politicians, the show was already dishing them, with other actors joining the mix like Junix Inocian, Joji Isla, Hero Bautista, Rene Requiestas, Wilson Go, Jon Achaval, Celeste Bueno, Dina Padilla, Errol Dionisio, Ching Arellano, Khryss Adalia, Nonoy Oplas, Nonie Buencamino, and Domeng Landicho.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, IBC was sequestered by the government, which led to the demise of the show in 1990.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abangan-ang-susunod-na-kabanata-on-90s-tv\"><strong>\u2018Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata\u2019<\/strong> on \u201990s TV<\/h5>\n<p>With the rise of ABS-CBN as one of the more prominent broadcasting companies in the country, many telenovelas made the network popular among viewers, but the satirical <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=likJ9N4suUs\">Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata<\/a> held its own.<\/p>\n<p>Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata aired from January 1991 to June 1997 with a star-studded cast led by Noel Trinidad, Tessie Tomas, Nova Villa, Roderick Paulate, Freddie Webb, and Nanette Inventor.<\/p>\n<p>The plot revolves around the day to day lives of the three families: Tengco, Delos Santos, and Lagmay. It ran from April to September 2001.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-michael-v-jon-santos-headline-the-2000s\"><strong>Michael V, Jon Santos<\/strong> headline the 2000s<\/h5>\n<p>As <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lionheartv.net\/2017\/10\/top-10-longest-running-tv-shows-philippines\/\">one of the longest running gag shows<\/a> in the Philippines, Bubble Gang first premiered in October 1995 with Uro dela Cruz serving as the show\u2019s director. Photo from GMA<\/p>\n<p>As the longest staying cast member, Michael V. has given comedic performances that sent Filipino audiences crying with laughter as his creativity and imagination truly shine.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s known for writing and spoofing many OPM songs like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mwi_QZITtAk\">\u201cWaiting Here sa Pila\u201d as Lola Kanor<\/a>, a parody on \u201cRaining in Manila\u201d by Lola Amour; to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QZRf0AvhT3o\">\u201cSalarin, Salarin\u201d with castmates turned girl group BINI-b10<\/a> as their take on the nation\u2019s girl group BINI hit, \u201cSalamin, Salamin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Michael V. also never fails to parody the big shots in the government. The renowned comedian recreated the look of pre-neck brace former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (amusingly renamed as Gloria Makapal-Arroyo) in \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QQb3ToKb_n0\">Cabinet Meeting<\/a>,\u201d aired in February 2001. Her impersonation of the former president started at a variety show at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she was then pursuing her studies.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, this was around the time when the impeachment trial of then president Joseph Ejercito \u201cErap\u201d Estrada was ongoing. Arroyo was the vice president, who then succeeded Estrada after the EDSA II in January 2001.<\/p>\n<p>With the impersonations and rally performances came the problem of her morals clashing with her political beliefs. It wasn\u2019t a hidden fact that she had criticized Arroyo in some events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do I draw the line? There were times I couldn\u2019t tell if I was thinking as Renee or Ate Glow. In an interview with ABS-CBN News, \u201cVee Pee Sara\u201d said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeron pong mga negative, kokonti lang po, mas marami pa rin po \u2018yung positive side na nagsu-support sa akin at natutuwa, \u2018yung mga negative comments po hindi ko po siya tinatake for me kasi wala naman po akong ginagawang masama, wala rin naman po akong ginagawang mali, as long as hindi po ako nagtatapak ng tao and hindi ko rin po siya sinsiraan, hindi ko siya minumura, hindi ko siya ginagawan ng masamang video and hindi ako nagbibigay ng maling information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(There are negative comments.
