My dad has had [the guitar] for a while, and it wasn\u2019t about maybe two months ago, he said, \u2018Hey, you need to take this home.\u2019 So ever since I\u2019ve had it, I\u2019ve been using it. To be playing the Opry, I thought it was appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the La Porte, Texas native\u2019s (just southeast of Houston) second album <em>When I Write The Song<\/em>, out today (Sept. 12) on Big Loud Texas, Worthington also brings bit of history to the fore, with his throwback sound that feels pulled directly from dusty honky-tonks and barrooms that inspired Texas country greats such as George Jones and Willie Nelson. Alongside contemporaries including tourmate Zach Top, Worthington has played a key role in reinvigorating modern country music with a sterling shot of old-school country sounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI like my music to sound like live music,\u201d Worthington says. \u201cAnd to me, it\u2019s not a specific sub-genre of a type, It\u2019s just country music to me. For the last good while, it seemed almost d\u2013n near impossible to get anybody behind that idea, within country music. And I think I\u2019ve never been more inspired with the world of music right now. I think it\u2019s still the Wild West, and I like that it\u2019s hairy and it\u2019s a \u2018Nobody\u2019s going to do it for you\u2019 type of thing. I just want to make music that I love and something I believe in, and I can only hope folks take to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHis new album continues to showcase Worthington\u2019s growing star power as an ardent devotee of country music\u2019s timeless sounds. His warm vocal, an instrument he can effortlessly bend to his will in old-school singing reminiscent of Jones or Mark Chesnutt, anchors Western swing in \u201cMy Home\u2019s In Oklahoma,\u201d \u201890s country-esque sounds in the humorous \u201cTwo First Names,\u201d and somber, honky-tonk self-reflection on \u201cI Only Drink When It Rains.\u201d Fiddle, steel guitar, piano, and acoustic guitars flow throughout the album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWorthington is a currently nominated for entertainer of the year at November\u2019s Texas Country Music Association Awards, while the new album\u2019s \u201cIt Ain\u2019t The Whiskey\u201d is nominated for the TCMA\u2019s country single of the year accolade.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWorthington has been signed with Big Loud since 2021 and when Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall teamed with Big Loud to form <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"google.com\/search?q=billboard+big+loud+texas&amp;oq=billboard+big+loud+texas&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRhA0gEIMjYyMGowajmoAgawAgHxBYF0J-7sQrLG&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/big-loud-texas-launch-miranda-lambert-jon-randall\/\">Big Loud Texas<\/a> in 2023, they quickly brought Worthington into the fold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI feel like it just garnered me more champions within the company,\u201d Worthington says. \u201cI feel really grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs the album\u2019s title nods to, Worthington had a hand in writing nearly every song on the album. The lone exception is a song Lambert wrote with Jesse Frasure, Dean Dillon and Jessie Jo Dillon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe told me the story that she had gotten the write with Dean and they had tossed ideas out and nothing was happening. I guess it started raining and Dean is pretty well known to just go light a cigarette, walk away and come back with brilliance. I guess he lit a cigarette and said, \u2018Hello, shitty day,\u2019 and Miranda had said, \u2018I want to write that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLambert sent the song to Worthington, who immediately decided to record it and asked Lambert to sing on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen it\u2019s all said and done, there will never be no one like her, and I feel really fortunate that I\u2019ve gotten to see that firsthand. I just thought, hearing her sing, \u2018She\u2019s one of the best singers I\u2019ve ever heard in my life,\u201d Worthington says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCountry Music Hall of Famer Marty Stuart joins him on \u201cI\u2019m The One,\u201d which has its own piece of guitar history embedded in the recording.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMarty\u2019s the coolest guy out there, and he is a steward of country music,\u201d Worthington says. \u201cWhen we did the [recording] session, he had brought the Clarence White Telecaster [which belonged to late Byrds musician Clarence White] and that\u2019s cultural architecture right there. They had put me in the vocal booth with Marty and they had an old reverb. I was singing, and he had the Clarence White going and you could feel the air off the amp, like I was getting baptized in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWorthington says Stuart also brought to the session a Martin D-45 guitar once owned by Hank Williams, Sr. \u201cIt had this bow tie inlay at the top by the bridge. Marty\u2019s the type of guy that\u2019ll be wearing a $50 gig bag around his neck, and it\u2019s got a million-dollar guitar in it. It could be Jimmie Rodgers\u2019 guitar, it could be Merle Haggard\u2019s guitar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe tender, piano-led track \u201cI Feel You,\u201d featuring harmonies from stellar vocalist Mae Estes, was written by Worthington with Roger Springer and Jacob Weinschenk \u2014 though Worthington says it also led to an eyebrow-raising, humorous situation when he played it for his wife Sophie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey really got started on that. I\u2019m writing it with them and I\u2019m just smelling the brownie points,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI\u2019m thinking, \u2018Sophie\u2019s gonna love this because they are true feelings and things that I probably don\u2019t say enough.\u2019 I got home to play it for her, she\u2019s listening to it and I\u2019m thinking she\u2019s just going to be knocked out by it. She goes, \u2018Who the f\u2014k\u2019s got auburn hair?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh, s\u2014t. That\u2019s Jacob\u2019s wife.\u2019 So for me to sing it, we had to change that lyric to \u2018golden.\u2019 So that was a fun little part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWorthington also has his wife Sophie to thank for bringing in Estes to sing on the track. \u201cI recorded it and realized the song needed a strong female harmony vocal. I called Sophie and got her thoughts on it and she goes, \u2018If you don\u2019t call Mae Estes right now, you\u2019re about the dumbest son of a b\u2014ch.\u2019 So that\u2019s what I did. I called and left Mae a voicemail at 3:30 in the morning and asked her to sing on the song. She said yes before she even heard it. I had already put my vocal down on it, but it was important to me to sing it together, so I canned that s\u2014t and she came into the studio and we sang it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOff the studio, Worthington has been soaking in his new role as dad to the couple\u2019s daughter Whitley, born nearly a year ago. \u201cMe and Sophie are very, very lucky people. We have a healthy, healthy, beautiful baby girl,\u201d says Worthington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe also notes his daughter is already showing some love for classic country: \u201cShe loves Merle Haggard. I mean, that girl could be just having a hissy fit, but Mama puts on a YouTube video of Merle Haggard live on [<em>Austin City Limits<\/em>], that little booger will flip around and find that music and just be mesmerized by it.
