The Henry Kapono Foundation has launched its Home in the Islands Music Festival, which includes more than 50 live events across the islands featuring musical legends and rising stars this month.<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to events such as Duke\u2019s on Sundays which feature Kapono and friends, there will also be a series of concerts that put the spotlight on up-and-coming singers and musicians. These artists are part of the foundation\u2019s On the Rise program, which launches the careers of young entertainers based in Hawai\u02bbi through professional shows, mentorship, masterclasses and publicity opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n The legendary singer and songwriter <\/span>Henry Kapono,<\/u><\/a> who founded the foundation, performed for many years with Cecilio David Rodriguez, before launching a solo career. Now, he performs regularly from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Duke\u2019s Waik\u012bk\u012b as part of a series Duke\u2019s on Sunday. For the last hour of each performance, music is livestreamed on Facebook. The N\u0101 H\u014dk\u016b Hanohano award-winning artist just released the extended play\u00a0\u201cSummertime,<\/u><\/span><\/a>\u201d on July 11, and has several upcoming performances on O\u02bbahu.<\/p>\n \u201cHome in the Islands isn\u2019t just a festival \u2013 it\u2019s a movement,\u201d said Kapono, in a written statement. \u201cIt\u2019s about celebrating the music, people and spirit of Hawai\u2018i, while creating opportunities for musicians to build fulfilling careers here at home or abroad \u2013 by choice, not necessity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The foundation was created in 2018. The Home in the Islands Music Festival launched in 2025. Some of the upcoming music festival events include performances by On the Rise artists at Duke\u2019s Waik\u012bk\u012b on O\u02bbahu; Don\u2019s Mai Tai Bar & Restaurant on Hawai\u02bbi Island; and Duke\u2019s Beach House Maui, among other locations. Seveal involve group performances, including these events:<\/span><\/p>\n Saturday, Sept. 13:<\/strong> On the Rise singers and musicians will perfom at the Center Stage at Ala Moana Center to celebrate the release of their \u201cOn the Rise\u201d CD. Performances run from 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n Wednesday, Sept. 17:<\/strong> Kapono joins\u00a0Steven Kealohapau\u02bbole Hong-Ming Wong<\/u><\/a>, known as Kealoha, the first poet laureate of Hawai\u02bbi, to present \u201cThe Wild Hawaiian. \u201d The album mixes \u02bb\u014cleleo Hawai\u02bbi and traditional oli with electric guitar and rock rhythms. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at the M\u0101noa Valley Theatre.
