Matt Von Roderick told <em>Goldmine<\/em>, \u201c\u2018Signs\u2019 has a circular feeling in the chord progression almost like Samuel Barber\u2019s \u2018Adagio for Strings\u2019 and it never fully resolves, being cyclical and spiraling. The song depicts a person\u2019s internal conflict that we all go through until you find a sense of control. The album is largely about overcoming challenges. Von Roderick continued, \u201c\u2018Hello\u2019 is one of the happier tracks because of the breakthrough that occurs with a change in one\u2019s life, experiencing the world anew. Peter Retzlaff went for something more ska-oriented on the drums, to give it that positivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cHello\u201d<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hello My Friends\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OSx15ipvzeA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The title tune \u201cPerfect Storm\u201d has a traditional Doc Severinsen-like styling with classy string sounds. Von Roderick agreed, \u201cDoc Severinsen, for any trumpet player, is an influence, legendary and incredible. He is a great example of having integrity and being a real craftsman, bringing it to millions of people and having commercial success. One of my favorite sections on the whole album is the string part on this song, which is emotionally satisfying.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cPerfect Storm\u201d<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Perfect Storm\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v8QVXO3HUAU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The dramatic \u201cCoexistence\u201d has a very long introduction, leading to wild abandon, crashing drums, and a \u201cHarlem Nocturne\u201d-like emotion in the middle. Von Roderick shared, \u201cIt is cinematic and has become a very important part of my live shows. It is the most avant-garde and probing track on the album. I sing and play simultaneously, producing multiple notes of harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cCoexistence\u201d<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coexistence\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wg1popapqEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The sole cover on the album is the dreamy Flaming Lips song \u201cDo You Realize??\u201d with thought-filled lyrics, making for a great finale. Von Roderick concluded, \u201cI offer a personal rendition of the song with my trumpet and vocals on loops. It is just me on this song. Bill Hein, who is a co-founder of Flatiron Recordings, who I am signed to, also signed The Flaming Lips to their original deal with Warner Bros. in the \u201890s. Their lead vocalist, Wayne Coyne, has heard my version and he loves it, thankfully. I started playing this song during the heart of the pandemic, it is one of the songs that I played last month at the Burning Man festival, along with \u2018Coexistence\u2019 and \u2018Signs.\u2019 It was a very special event despite this year&#8217;s weather at Black Rock City.
