While most purport to be revealing and candid reflections of a famous subject, they often amount to disjointed pieces of a story, from which we never get a full sense, at least not an objective one.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such is the case in \u201caka Charlie Sheen,\u201d Netflix\u2019s exhausting two-part documentary directed by Andrew Renzi, which sees the former \u201cTwo and a Half Men\u201d star open up about his ugly public truths \u2014 his drug addiction, wild lifestyle, the public spectacles, his disastrous fall from TV grace \u2014 and others he\u2019s yet to speak on until now. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film, split into two 90-minute parts, is filled with unflinching revelations about Sheen\u2019s colorful past that started <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/charlie-sheen-sex-men-interview_n_68bc3bd1e4b0acb9ffec1d19\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"making headlines before it even premiered\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68c34425e4b0e8417820b595\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"68bc3bd1e4b0acb9ffec1d19\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making headlines before it even premiered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Sept. 10. Publications have already rounded up the juiciest and most salacious tidbits revealed because they know that\u2019s exactly what people are tuning in for. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s understandable why the documentary is currently the No. 1 movie on Netflix. That\u2019s just the world we live in now. The metric isn\u2019t a measure of how well put together \u201caka Charlie Sheen\u201d actually is, but rather what piques audiences\u2019 interest these days, which, in Sheen\u2019s case, happens to be the darkest aspects of his life and career that he\u2019s still living in the shadow of.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s just one issue with his documentary. The other is what many celebrity docs that feature their subject often suffer from: the inability to relinquish control.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Sheen isn\u2019t credited as a producer on his film, he appears to steer the narrative as if he were one. A question Renzi poses at the top of Part 1 suggests so, as he curiously asks the actor, \u201cHow do you imagine structuring the story of Charlie Sheen?\u201d To which the latter breaks it down into three neat sections: \u201cPartying, partying with problems and then just problems.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s pretty much how the doc is organized, which says a lot about what Renzi \u2014 and Sheen \u2014 want us to know about the actor at this point in his life, now eight years sober and on a path toward self-forgiveness, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/charlie-sheen-wild-past-sobriety-forgiveness-exclusive-11801338\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"by his own account\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68c34425e4b0e8417820b595\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/people.com\/charlie-sheen-wild-past-sobriety-forgiveness-exclusive-11801338\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by his own account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the director\u2019s credit, several figures in Sheen\u2019s life speak in the doc as well \u2014 including his older brother, Ramon Estevez; his childhood friend, Sean Penn; former \u201cTwo and a Half Men\u201d co-star Jon Cryer; his ex-wives Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller; and even Heidi Fleiss, the Hollywood madam that Sheen (one of her former clients) testified against in her 1995 federal money laundering and tax evasion trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richards makes it a point to share why she agreed to sit down for an interview, which is commendable to a degree when you think about the purpose of the film.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want to peel the layers and be honest because, otherwise, this movie is going to be a fluffy, glossed-over, sugar-coated piece of shit,\u201d she says in Part 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while \u201caka Charlie Sheen\u201d is brutally honest in some respects, where seemingly no topic is off-limits, it still holds back when it shouldn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"cli cli-image js-no-inject\">\n<div class=\"img-sized\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/68c3489a180000fc648c7bc8.png?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale&amp;format=webp 1x, https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/68c3489a180000fc648c7bc8.png?ops=scalefit_1440&amp;format=webp 2x\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"Sheen rehashes his Hollywood journey, his public spiral, substance abuse and more in his Netflix documentary.\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/68c3489a180000fc648c7bc8.png?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/68c3489a180000fc648c7bc8.png?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale 1x, https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/68c3489a180000fc648c7bc8.png?ops=scalefit_1440 2x\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-image__source-wrapper\"><figcaption class=\"cli-image__caption caption-cli\">Sheen rehashes his Hollywood journey, his public spiral, substance abuse and more in his Netflix documentary.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, there are poignant mentions of Sheen\u2019s childhood \u2014 growing up with his famous father, Martin Sheen, and older brother, Emilio Estevez (both of whom declined to participate in the film) \u2014 as well as his battles with sobriety and fatherhood. There are even interesting stories about the actor\u2019s professional pursuits, like the time he had to turn down the lead part in \u201cKarate Kid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, much of the doc\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three-hour runtime is spent revisiting the most sensational parts of Sheen\u2019s life \u2014 the sex, drugs, partying and crashouts \u2014 leaving little room for depth, and even less for examining how Sheen, despite hitting rock bottom <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> times, has still managed to stage a comeback (or as he calls it, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.interviewmagazine.com\/culture\/charlie-sheen-in-conversation-with-emilio-estevez\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"a \u201creset\u201d\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68c34425e4b0e8417820b595\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.interviewmagazine.com\/culture\/charlie-sheen-in-conversation-with-emilio-estevez\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a \u201creset\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other stars, particularly those who aren\u2019t white men from successful families, aren\u2019t always afforded the same second chances. So how does Sheen reckon with that privilege?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such nuanced queries don\u2019t make it into \u201caka Charlie Sheen,\u201d as it seems Renzi had other interests in mind, like making a film Sheen didn\u2019t even want to be a part of.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe did not want to make a documentary,\u201d the director told <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/aka-charlie-sheen-release-date-trailer-news\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Tudum\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68c34425e4b0e8417820b595\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/aka-charlie-sheen-release-date-trailer-news\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tudum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c[Sheen] was like, \u2018Why step into this arena in this way?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a great question, especially since the actor is already <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/charlie-sheen-announces-new-memoir-exclusive-11756351\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"releasing a tell-all book this fall\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68c34425e4b0e8417820b595\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/people.com\/charlie-sheen-announces-new-memoir-exclusive-11756351\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">releasing a tell-all book this fall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that rehashes the same stories. And yet, he still sat for Renzi\u2019s film to seemingly set the record straight on rumors and stories about him that come to define his public persona.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, some of those moments don\u2019t get all the attention they deserve; the doc\u2019s director saves the most weighty topics for last \u2014 and makes a show of clearing out the diner he filmed Sheen\u2019s interviews at for a private chat between the two \u2014 and breezes through them as if they\u2019re not among the film\u2019s biggest revelations that Sheen has never openly talked about.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is the Corey Haim allegation that was made by actor Corey Feldman, who claimed that Haim told him that Sheen sexually assaulted the late actor during filming for 1986\u2019s \u201cLucas.\u201d Sheen vehemently denied the accusation before encouraging anyone who\u2019d pause the doc to Google the story to \u201cgo for it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For as often as you hear Renzi\u2019s voice throughout the doc, he\u2019s particularly quiet here, and doesn\u2019t push back as Sheen shrugs off the claim. \u201cFuck off,\u201d the actor concludes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film then transitions to address Sheen\u2019s HIV diagnosis, which Renzi explores with leading questions about the actor being blackmailed over it and sued for allegedly knowingly passing HIV to his sexual partners, which Sheen also denied. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This part moves on just as swiftly to get to the \u201cbombshell\u201d that\u2019s not exactly explosive (depending on who you ask): Sheen\u2019s sexual experiences with men that started with his use of crack cocaine \u2014 an admission that arrives in the last 15 minutes of the doc. He never actually says it outright, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, Sheen talks <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the topic exhaustedly with a convoluted metaphor about restaurant menus and appetizers, and ultimately leaves it to those who are \u201cgonna come out of the fucking woodwork\u201d to explain the sexual encounters he\u2019s had with men, true or otherwise. Renzi eventually pries the confession out of Sheen, who then rattles off questions about what could\u2019ve possibly led him down that path, but he doesn\u2019t try to answer them. In the end, he simply chalks the experiences up to being \u201cweird\u201d and \u201cfun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s hardly the approach you\u2019d expect from a doc that promises Sheen is ready to be more open than ever. And this is where \u201caka Charlie Sheen,\u201d and docs alike, fall short of delivering the vulnerable celebrity self-portrait it sets out to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get me wrong, there are still some introspective moments in the film, like in Part 1, when Sheen explains how he was \u201cdeathly afraid\u201d of how his drug use would get away from him after being introduced to crack (and receiving oral sex at the same time).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got a little shaky telling that\u2026 I could feel some of that shit coming back up,\u201d Sheen admits in the doc. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Renzi\u2019s film opts to focus on moments that remind us more of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sheen has done in his past, rather than digging into the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind those actions. And in most scenes where Sheen reflects on his worst publicized moments, he does so with little regard for what hardships he put those around him through. But Richards and Mueller fill in some of those blanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Part 2, Mueller recalls recanting her statement about a drug-dazed, domestic violence incident that occurred around Christmas 2009, where Sheen was arrested for allegedly holding a knife to her throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had to recant my story,\u201d Mueller says, taking partial blame. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t, then he could have gotten into a lot of trouble.\u201d Sheen, who was arrested for the incident, acknowledges his part and says he and his ex-wife are \u201cpast it,\u201d but the doc spends quite a few minutes revisiting the public fallout. It makes you wonder what the actual motive is if not accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair just to pick up these moments at Charlie\u2019s lowest and define him as a human being based on those moments,\u201d Mueller points out. Funny, because that\u2019s exactly what the doc is doing.
