So. So. So. Many. Movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Back-to-back film festivals in Venice, Telluride, Colorado, and Toronto are where studios bring their biggest, most prestigious fall titles for splashy world premieres amid a gathering of international press. It can feel a little like being in an antigravity chamber with a very loose door policy: You\u2019re a little high from the adrenaline, there are way too many people in here and it\u2019s impossible to track who\u2019s up and who\u2019s down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some movies immediately stumbled (Luca Guadagnino\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/articles\/julia-roberts-entered-oscar-hunt-142027717.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">\u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d<\/a> Edward Berger\u2019s \u201cBallad of a Small Player\u201d). Some bobbled, but are back upright (chiefly, Noah Baumbach\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly,\u201d starring George Clooney, which got a lukewarm reception in Venice and raves out of Telluride). Some defied expectations (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/articles\/russell-crowe-terrifying-nazi-high-195922211.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cNuremberg,\u201d starring Russell Crowe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">\u201cNuremberg,\u201d starring Russell Crowe<\/a>). It tells the wrenching story of William Shakespeare\u2019s family and the tragedy that may have inspired \u201cHamlet,\u201d but it is also a universal tale of grief and the transformative power of art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Still, it\u2019s September. The Oscars are six months away and some anticipated debuts still await. Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=feOQFKv2Lw4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d<\/a> has been getting raves from the select critics who\u2019ve seen it (Steven Spielberg <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/steven-spielberg-one-battle-after-another-review-1236365912\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said he\u2019s watched it three times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said he\u2019s watched it three times<\/a>), and it will open in theaters Sept. 26 without bowing at a festival. September\u2019s festivals have only proven its strength. Right now, its best picture odds are basically tied with \u201cHamnet\u201d (at 91 percent) on the betting site Kalshi \u2014 by no means a scientific measure, but a decent indicator of how, right now, this feels like a two-movie race. (That is, until we see <b>\u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/b>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Also on the rise is Joachim Trier\u2019s <b>\u201cSentimental Value.\u201d<\/b> It emerged as the biggest contender from Cannes \u2014 a May festival that has increasingly become an Oscars tastemaker, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/why-anora-dominated-oscars-including-095713438.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:producing last year\u2019s best picture winner \u201cAnora.\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">producing last year\u2019s best picture winner \u201cAnora.\u201d<\/a> A family drama in both English and Swedish, it reteams Trier with his \u201cThe Worst Person In the World\u201d star Renate Reinsve. She plays a stage actress whose estranged filmmaker father (Stellan Skarsgard) asks her to star in a movie he\u2019s written about their family\u2019s deepest unspoken tragedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>The murky middle<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Netflix had a particularly busy fall festival run. But it also came with chatter that the duo just need to take a break already.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As for the foreign language features, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/iranian-dissident-jafar-panahi-wins-203008059.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Palme d\u2019Or winner;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">the Palme d\u2019Or winner<\/a>, <b>\u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d<\/b> from Iranian dissident director Jafar Panahi, is a real best picture contender, because<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/jafar-panahi-oscars-change-international-feature-rules-1236498494\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:academy rules;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> academy rules<\/a> probably mean it can\u2019t get nominated as an international feature. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/articles\/russell-crowe-terrifying-nazi-high-195922211.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Appealingly old-fashioned;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Appealingly old-fashioned<\/a> <b>\u201cNuremberg,\u201d<\/b> about the six months in 1946 when the world tried Nazi leaders for war crimes, and <b>\u201cRental Family,\u201d<\/b> a whimsical comedy starring Brendan Fraser as an American actor in Tokyo, both got mixed reviews out of the Toronto International Film Festival. But they have emotional, crowd-pleasing appeal. Look for them to be far greater hits with audiences and older academy members than they were with critics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>Wild cards<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">How the rest of the field shakes out will largely depend on which talked-about Venice films manage to land U.S. distribution, and whether more foreign-language features will crack the top 10, as they increasingly have, ever since the academy diversified its membership. <b>\u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab,\u201d<\/b> a drama that uses real voice recordings to tell <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/articles\/gaza-movie-voice-hind-rajab-211632433.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the story of a 6-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in Gaza;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">the story of a 6-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in Gaza<\/a> after Israel Defense Forces shot over 300 bullets into her family\u2019s car, could make a powerful case for best picture. And then there\u2019s the broadly praised <b>\u201cNo Other Choice,\u201d<\/b> a darkly funny, full-throttle South Korean unemployment revenge saga from \u201cOldboy\u201d director Park Chan-wook. It\u2019s coming out Christmas Day in the United States, from Neon, the company that launched \u201cParasite\u201d as a phenomenon. But since it was bafflingly shut out of an award at Venice, it faces an uphill battle.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><button aria-label=\"View larger image\" class=\"group absolute bottom-3 right-3 size-10 md:size-[50px] lg:inset-0 lg:size-full lg:bg-transparent\" data-ylk=\"elm:expand;itc:1;sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;\"><span class=\"absolute bottom-0 right-0 rounded-full bg-white p-3 opacity-100 shadow-elevation-3 transition-opacity duration-300 group-hover:block group-hover:opacity-100 md:p-[17px] lg:bottom-6 lg:right-6 lg:bg-white\/90 lg:p-5 lg:opacity-0 lg:shadow-none\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"size-4 lg:size-6\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\"><path d=\"M12.372.92c0-.506.41-.916.915-.916L21 0l-.004 7.712a.917.917 0 0 1-1.832 0V3.183l-6.827 6.828-1.349-1.348 6.828-6.828h-4.529a.915.915 0 0 1-.915-.915M1.835 17.816l6.828-6.828 1.349 1.349-6.829 6.827h4.529a.915.915 0 0 1 0 1.831L0 21l.004-7.713a.916.916 0 0 1 1.831 0z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><dialog aria-label=\"Modal Dialog\" aria-modal=\"true\" class=\"fixed inset-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p>\u201cSinners\u201d filmmaker Ryan Coogler photographed at Buddy Guy\u2019s Legends in Chicago earlier this year. &#8211; (Akilah Townsend\/For The Washington Post)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This might actually be the most diverse, dynamic major category this year. <b>Zhao<\/b> (\u201cHamnet\u201d) could become the first woman to win best director twice, and as a Chinese immigrant, at that. <b>Coogler<\/b> (\u201cSinners\u201d) looks like a lock for his first directing nomination. <b>Panahi<\/b> (\u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d), twice jailed in Iran and banned for 20 years from making movies, could be rewarded for doing just that with his knockout film. <b>Trier<\/b> (\u201cSentimental Value\u201d) and <b>Park<\/b> (\u201cNo Other Choice\u201d) are also in the mix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The category might also have soap opera intrigue. <b>James Cameron<\/b> could get rewarded for the billions his Avatar movies have made, alongside his ex-wife <b>Bigelow<\/b> (\u201cA House of Dynamite\u201d), who\u2019s gotten raves for her first movie since 2017\u2019s \u201cDetroit.\u201d Most fascinating are the estranged <b>Safdie brothers<\/b>, who\u2019ve broken up as a directing duo after making the acclaimed \u201cUncut Gems.\u201d Benny just won best director at Venice for \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d and Josh has A24\u2019s most prominent release with \u201cMarty Supreme.\u201d Which sibling, if either, will win out?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of course, if the internet had its way, the winner would be <b>Anderson <\/b>(\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d). Spielberg called this absurdist comedy, in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays a former resistance group member who has to recruit other revolutionaries to save his missing daughter, the next \u201cDr. Strangelove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Judging from the rapturous response to \u201cHamnet,\u201d <b>Jessie Buckley<\/b> is the clear front-runner. As Shakespeare\u2019s wife, Agnes, she is raw and primal, an outcast in her family who feels a connection with the forest that borders on witchcraft, and a calling in being a mother that courses through her body and straight onto the screen. It is the performance that will break your heart. Joining her up top is <b>Cynthia Erivo<\/b>, who seems likely to get her second Oscar nomination in back-to-back years for the same part in the \u201cWicked\u201d sequel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>Renate Reinsve<\/b> (\u201cSentimental Value\u201d) is also incredibly strong as an actress daughter trying to forgive her emotionally avoidant filmmaker father. <b>June Squibb<\/b>, one hopes, will prove irresistible. His Shakespeare is away in London during half the movie building the Globe. Jordan<\/b> somehow gets lost in the shuffle because \u201cSinners\u201d peaked too early. The man plays twins! Another tragedy would be the academy overlooking <b>Lee Byung-hun<\/b> as a worker who wages war for his family after getting laid off in \u201cNo Other Choice.\u201d He towers over his Western competition, and this is a chance for the academy to make up for snubbing the South Korean cast of \u201cParasite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of the fall festival debuts, <b>Jesse Plemons<\/b> is in the strongest position; even if his sparring-partner Stone doesn\u2019t get nominated, it\u2019s hard to deny how mesmerizing and fearsome he is as a conspiracy nut in \u201cBugonia.\u201d <b>Dwayne Johnson<\/b> is also looking solid for going vulnerable and transforming his face and body as mixed martial arts champion Mark Kerr in \u201cThe Smashing Machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Otherwise, the bubble is vast. <b>Oscar Isaac<\/b> is at his passionate best as the doctor in \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d who may be the movie\u2019s real monster. Brazilian star <b>Wagner Moura<\/b>, of \u201cNarcos\u201d fame, won best actor at Cannes for \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d a sprawling, often funny and deeply personal yarn about a good man on the run. <b>Fraser<\/b> has a poignant turn as a lonely actor who finds purpose and connection by pretending to be a little girl\u2019s father in \u201cRental Family.\u201d (Also, he learned to speak Japanese for it!) <b>George Clooney<\/b>\u2019s popularity among his peers could prove vital for a nod, playing some version of himself in \u201cJay Kelly\u201d \u2014 more narcissistic and regretful, perhaps, but a movie star nonetheless. And who decides on Oscars? Actors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>Teyana Taylor<\/b> got to shoot a machine gun while very, very pregnant in \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and would absolutely be the most fun person to have on the awards trail (other than Squibb!). <b>Wunmi Mosaku<\/b> also deserves her flowers as Annie, the earthy, sensual heart of \u201cSinners.\u201d <b>Ariana Grande<\/b> probably can\u2019t be denied for \u201cWicked,\u201d either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Otherwise, this category is wide open. Unconventional heroines we\u2019re rooting for: <b>Son Ye-jin<\/b> as a wife carrying her family\u2019s secret in \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d; <b>Zoey Deutch<\/b> as Jean Seberg with a purposefully terrible French accent in \u201cNouvelle Vague\u201d (Richard Linklater\u2019s ode to the making of \u201cBreathless\u201d); and <b>Glenn Close<\/b>, who is fabulous as the devout housekeeper in \u201cWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.\u201d The woman\u2019s 78 and been nominated eight times without a win!<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This feels like the most unsettled category of all. <b>Skarsgard<\/b> is a likely front-runner, as the charming yet loathsome filmmaker father from \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d If <b>Mescal<\/b> goes for supporting rather than lead actor for \u201cHamnet,\u201d he\u2019ll be on top of this list.
