\n\tZayn<\/a> is back with new music, and while it isn\u2019t part of a new album this time around, the singer says his latest release is just as personal. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe British singer-songwriter has teamed up with 2K and Gearbox Software on the release of \u201cBreak Free,\u201d an original song that Zayn recorded for \u201cBorderlands 4<\/a>,\u201d the latest entry in the iconic first-person video game franchise.<\/p>\n

\n\tDue out September 19, the song was inspired by the new setting<\/a> and \u201cexpressive action\u201d of \u201cBorderlands 4<\/a>,\u201d per a release. The game introduces players to the all-new planet, Kairos, along with four new Vault Hunters, as they fight through foes and obstacles to retrieve a secret treasure. Each Vault Hunter possesses unique abilities that \u201cintroduce even more ways to crush, bash, and destroy enemies,\u201d the release notes, especially when combined with \u201cliterally\u00a0billions<\/em>\u00a0of weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Zayn has largely stayed out of the spotlight when he\u2019s not promoting his own music, the \u201cDusk Till Dawn\u201d singer says he jumped at the opportunity to soundtrack one of his favorite past times.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I\u2019m not working or with my daughter, my usual place is in front of the console, gaming<\/a> with my friends back home in the UK,\u201d he tells Variety. \u201cI\u2019ve played \u201cBorderlands\u201d before, so when I was asked to collaborate on the music, it was a no brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the game was released September 12 on PlayStation<\/a> and Xbox<\/a> (it\u2019s due out October 3 on Nintendo Switch 2), fans will have to wait another week before hearing Zayn\u2019s song, and the singer isn\u2019t revealing much about \u201cBreak Free\u201d except that it was \u201cfun to experiment with new sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZayn\u2019s last album was 2024\u2019s well-received \u201cRoom Under the Stairs,<\/a>\u201d which was recorded at his home studio in rural Pennsylvania and introduced a more cozy, stripped-down sound. But the singer says that working on a video game song took him out of his comfort zone, which is exactly the challenge he was looking for. \u201cThe cool thing about working on collaborative projects for me is the fact that it\u2019s not always in my ball park creatively,\u201d he shares. \u201cI get to venture into new places sonically and emotionally as I feel like it doesn\u2019t have to be a direct correlation to what I\u2019m working on with my album.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFans may get a little preview of \u201cBreak Free\u201d tonight, when Zayn goes live on his Twitch channel<\/a> to play a little \u201cBorderlands 4\u201d and talk about his collaboration. The livestream is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n

\n\tZayn says gaming has provided plenty of memories for him over the years, dating back to when he was just a child, growing up in Northern England. \u201cI\u2019ve been an avid gamer as far back as I can remember,\u201d he says, adding that, \u201cthe first console I ever had was a Super Nintendo that my parents got me for my third birthday, so that\u2019s 29 years in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for what he likes about the new \u201cBorderlands\u201d release: \u201cI love the art direction,\u201d he offers. \u201cIt\u2019s very vivid and expressive and feels very anime.\u00a0It\u2019s also a narrative game which feels more and more like a rarity these days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBreak Free\u201d could be the only new music we get from Zayn this year; the singer hasn\u2019t announced a follow up to \u201cRoom Under the Stairs,\u201d and the notoriously stage-shy performer has no other public appearances scheduled for 2025 (he did complete a sold-out UK and North American tour<\/a> in March). While he teases that he\u2019s \u201calways working on new projects,\u201d the 32-year-old appears content for now to spend time with his soon-to-be five-year-old daughter Khai, and perfecting his other loves: \u201ccooking and barbecuing.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tZayn dutifully notes that he\u2019s \u201calways gaming\u201d when he finds any free time, and 2K confirms the artist \u201chas long been a fan of the \u2018Borderlands\u2019 franchise.\u201d As for what other entertainment he consumes? \u201cI watch a lot of cartoons,\u201d Zayn admits. \u201cAdult Swim is always on. I did watch the new show\u00a0\u201cMobLand\u201d<\/a> recently,\u201d he adds: \u201cI\u2019d definitely recommend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t2K and Gamebox are no doubt hoping the collaboration with Zayn will bring new fans to the fold, or have longtime fans recommending \u201cBorderlands\u201d to others. Calling it the \u201cbiggest \u2018Borderlands\u2019 world ever,\u2019 \u201cBorderlands 4\u201d will be released in a Standard Edition, Deluxe Edition and Super Deluxe Edition. Zayn\u2019s original song, \u201cBreak Free,\u201d meantime, is set to be released next week with an accompanying music video.<\/p>\n
