The director of the upcoming Predator: Badlands movie has teased that its crossover with the Alien franchise will be “more authentic” than what’s come before.<\/p>\n

The two sci-fi series have been mashed-up before in two films in the 2000s that weren’t very well received, as well as plenty of comics and video games.<\/p>\n

The Badlands trailer confirmed that the universes are joining once again<\/a>, as Elle Fanning’s character is actually a synthetic being created by Weyland-Yutani, the mega-corporation that is persistently trying to round up bioweapons for nefarious purposes.<\/p>\n

In the latest issue of SFX magazine, director Dan Trachtenberg explained that he had a synth in the film for thematic reasons rather than a reference for reference’s sake.<\/p>\n

“What it alludes to, what I\u2019ve been putting out there now, is that there aren\u2019t any humans in the movie,” he said.<\/p>\n

“So it’s certainly cool, the science fiction idea of it used to be that they would send a colony of humans to a place and they’d give them a synth in previous Alien instalments.<\/p>\n

“It feels more authentic, more science in the fiction, to think that actually they’d probably send some synths out there first to make sure everything’s all right before they send some humans.<\/p>\n

“So there’s definitely a big army of synths on that planet trying to figure out what’s going on there and they are at odds with what [the Predator] Dek is also trying to do there.”<\/p>\n

Fanning added that she went back and rewatched the Alien movies to “see how everyone has interpreted the synths”.<\/p>\n

“People were excited to see [the synth] in the little first teaser,” she said. “I was geeking out. There are some real iconic things that were laying around our set, props and really cool stuff.<\/p>\n

“In the trailer they showed the super power loader. That was there. So I’m like, ‘Okay, that’s pretty iconic’. So I was excited about all of that.”<\/p>\n

Predator: Badlands is released in cinemas on 7 November.<\/strong><\/p>\n
