{"id":2019590,"date":"2025-09-13T17:04:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T17:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2019590"},"modified":"2025-09-13T17:04:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T17:04:06","slug":"these-music-genres-can-reduce-motion-sickness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/these-music-genres-can-reduce-motion-sickness\/","title":{"rendered":"These music genres can reduce motion sickness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2025%2F09%2Fnewspress-collage-4tzhmri26-1757782760596.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%261757768433\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Music might soothe your soul \u2014 but could it also stop you from hurling on the highway?<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/human-neuroscience\/articles\/10.3389\/fnhum.2025.1636109\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> suggests that the right tunes might help fight off motion sickness, while others could leave you queasy, sweaty and reaching for a barf bag. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s no small thing: about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/motion-sickness\/#frequency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 in 3 Americans<\/a> are highly susceptible to carsickness, but nearly everyone will experience it at some point in their lifetime.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Your favorite playlist might do more than just help pass the time on a road trip.  <span class=\"credit\">F8  \\ Suport Ukraine \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMotion sickness significantly impairs the travel experience for many individuals, and existing pharmacological interventions often carry side-effects such as drowsiness,\u201d Dr. Qizong Yue of China\u2019s Southwest University, who co-authored the study, said in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/news\/2025\/09\/03\/happy-music-could-help-you-recover-from-motion-sickness-frontiers-human-neuroscience?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic represents a non-invasive, low-cost, and personalized intervention strategy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But before you blast your favorite playlist, be warned: the sadder the song, the sicker you might get.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>In the study, Yue and his team recruited 30 carsick-prone volunteers and strapped them into a nausea-inducing driving simulator.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the participants wore a cap wired with 64 electrodes to monitor their brain activity during the experiment. <\/p>\n<p>When the queasiness kicked in, they were split into four groups, each listening to a different style of music for 60 seconds. A control group was played no music, letting their symptoms fade naturally.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>While the study zeroed in on cars, music might also ease motion sickness on planes and boats. <span class=\"credit\">Parkin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The scientists found that upbeat music was the top cure \u2014 easing motion sickness by a whopping 57.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Soft tunes weren\u2019t far behind, cutting symptoms by 56.7%, while passionate music helped by 48.3%.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>But sad songs fell flat. That group saw just a 40% drop \u2014 which was 3.3% worse than the group that didn\u2019t listen to anything at all after feeling sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on our conclusions, individuals experiencing motion sickness symptoms during travel can listen to cheerful or gentle music to achieve relief,\u201d Yue said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brainwave data backed it up.<\/p>\n<p>The electrode caps revealed a drop in complex activity in the occipital lobe \u2014 the part of the brain that processes visuals and plays a key role in motion sickness \u2014 whenever participants felt queasy.<\/p>\n<p>The better the participants said they felt, the more their brain activity in the region bounced back. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>When participants felt sick, electrical activity in their occipital lobe became less active and complex.  <span class=\"credit\">peterschreiber.media \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers theorized that soft music soothes nausea and dizziness by easing tension and calming the brain. Joyful tunes, meanwhile, activate the brain\u2019s reward system, helping distract from discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Sad songs, on the other hand, might have the opposite effect \u2014 stirring up negative feelings and making recovery harder than if you hadn\u2019t listened to anything at all, they suggested.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe primary theoretical frameworks for motion sickness genesis apply broadly to sickness induced by various vehicles,\u201d Ye said. \u201cTherefore, the findings of this study likely extend to motion sickness experienced during <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/06\/lifestyle\/flight-attendant-reveals-the-worst-spot-on-a-plane-if-youre-prone-to-motion-sickness-and-how-to-combat-it\/\">air or sea travel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he stressed more research is needed to confirm if music can really ease your discomfort on the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary limitation of this study is its relatively small sample size,\u201d Ye said, noting that all participants were also between 20 and 30 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the study used a driving simulator, not real roads, which could affect how motion sickness and brain activity actually play out.<\/p>\n<p>In future studies, Ye and his team plan to test more people and take the experiments out on real roads to see if the simulator results hold up.<\/p>\n<p>They also want to find out if personal music taste affects which tunes work best to curb carsickness.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time researchers have zeroed in on the ears as a way to fight motion sickness.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Japanese researchers unveiled \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/ehpm\/30\/0\/30_24-00247\/_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sound spice<\/a>,\u201d a new treatment that uses a unique sound wave to stimulate the inner ear, easing nausea and dizziness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effective sound level falls within the range of everyday environmental noise exposure, suggesting that the sound technology is both effective and safe,\u201d said lead researcher Takumi Kagawa.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em> \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source celebrity.land \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Music might soothe your soul \u2014 but could it also stop you from hurling on the highway?
