This October and November, you’re going to have a rare opportunity to catch The Manfreds for their epic 60th anniversary tour\u2014if you live in the U.K., that is.<\/p>\n
Formerly known as the \u201960s chart-topping band Manfred Mann, original members Paul Jones<\/strong> and Tom McGuinness<\/strong> will be joined by Pete Riley<\/strong>, Mike Gorman<\/strong>, Simon Currie<\/strong>, and Marcus Cliff<\/strong> for the 30-date tour<\/a>. Another sweet addition is Noel McCalla<\/strong>, who served as Manfred Mann\u2019s Earth Band singer from 1991 to 2009.<\/p>\n Related: From ‘Piano Man’ to ‘Let\u2019s Get It On, Learn the Stories Behind the 15 Most Unforgettable Songs of 1973<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n According to Gold Radio<\/em>, Jones said, \u201cI\u2019m eagerly anticipating another great tour \u2013 not only with the magnificent Manfreds, but also with the marvelous Mister McCalla.\u201d<\/p>\n During their tour under their rebranded monike<\/a>r, the group will perform their catalog of hits spanning six decades, including their debut \u201c5-4-3-2-1\u201d and chart-toppers like \u201cDo Wah Diddy Diddy\u201d and \u201cPretty Flamingo.\u201d Not to mention their famous rendition of their No. 1 U.S. hit, \u201cBlinded by the Light.\u201d<\/p>\n It isn\u2019t often that a cover song overshadows the original\u2019s success, but the \u201960s rhythm-and-blues rockers managed it. \u201cBlinded by the Light\u201d was originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> in 1973 for his album Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.<\/em> Three years later, Manfred Mann\u2019s Earth Band shot to No. 1 with their version\u2014the only Springsteen-penned song ever to top the U.S. charts.<\/p>\n The band tweaked the lyrics, changing Springsteen\u2019s line \u201cCut loose like a deuce \/ Another runner in the night\u201d to \u201cRevved up like a deuce \/ Another runner in the night.\u201d Fans famously misheard it as \u201cwrapped up like a douche,\u201d which Springsteen laughed about in 2005<\/a>, according to American Songwriter<\/em>: \u201cDeuce was like a Little Deuce Coupe, as in a two-seater hot rod. Douche is a feminine hygienic procedure. But what can I say, the public spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n Funny enough, Manfred Mann himself, who is not part of The Manfreds revival, almost passed on the track<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI made a list of three or four songs that I thought could make singles, and Blinded\u2026<\/em> was at the bottom,\u201d he told Louder Sound<\/em>. \u201cEven when I got round to it I didn\u2019t really see it.\u201d<\/p>\n That wasn\u2019t the only cover the band made more popular during their career. In the \u201960s, Manfred Mann found chart success reworking Bob Dylan<\/strong>\u2019s cast-off songs he never made singles himself.<\/p>\n Their cover of \u201cMighty Quinn\u201d hit No. 1, and \u201cIf You Gotta Go, Go Now\u201d peaked at No. 2.
