Emma Heming Willis has revealed she and her husband, Bruce Willis, have crafted their own language so they may continue communicating amid his continued dementia struggles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 70-year-old Die Hard<\/em><\/a> icon was informed in 2022 that he has aphasia<\/a>, a disorder impacting how the brain comprehends and\/or formulates language. As per<\/a> the Mayo Clinic, Aphasia can affect how you speak, as well as the way you write.<\/p>\n

A year later, Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia<\/a> (FTD), an uncommon, slow-developing form of dementia that causes problems with behavior<\/a>, personality, and language.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s just about sitting with him, walking with him, listening to him as he tries to verbalise in his own language. Hearing him, validating him. You know.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, alleging the situation for the family was \u2018hard\u2019 whilst calling FTD an \u2018unkind disease\u2019.<\/p>\n

On Thursday (September 11), Emma\u2019s book<\/a>, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,<\/em> detailing her years caring for Willis, was released via HarperCollins.<\/p>\n

The memoir is described as a \u2018deeply personal and richly compassionate supportive guide\u2019, designed to help caregivers \u2018care for themselves while they navigate a loved one’s dementia.\u2019<\/p>\n

In an excerpt shared<\/a> by US Weekly, Emma explained why the decision was made for the Death Becomes Her<\/em> star to move out of the family home and into separate living quarters with 24-hour care.<\/p>\n

The announcement was previously made during Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey \u2013 A Diane Sawyer Special,<\/em> which aired on August 26.<\/p>\n

She alleged that while the choice was \u2018painful\u2019, it was one she believed Willis would want.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though they\u2019d lived with his disease for so long that they understood, and even though this decision ensures Bruce\u2019s overall well-being and safety and allows our young children to thrive, it was an uncertain and painful time for us,\u201d Emma wrote.<\/p>\n

The Unexpected Journey<\/em> also recalls how their children, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, were informed their dad would be living elsewhere.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018We\u2019ve come to a point in Daddy\u2019s disease where the care he requires is changing. It has to be more tailored to his every need,\u2019 I told them. \u2018And you should be in a home that is more tailored to your needs now\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Also, Daddy would want you to have playdates, sleepovers, and more freedom than you\u2019ve been able to have here. That would make him so happy.\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n

Emma also revealed that her spouse\u2019s accommodation is somewhere where they \u2018keep personal things like toys, arts and crafts supplies, bathing suits, pj\u2019s, and games,\u2019 and that they were allowed to go and stay with him \u2018anytime they wanted.\u2019<\/p>\n
