The People\u2019s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2025 50th\u00a0Toronto<\/a>\u00a0Film Festival has gone to Hamnet,\u00a0first runner-up is\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0and second runner-up is\u00a0Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. <\/p>\n Voted on by audience members since 1978 and often considered a harbinger for the Best Picture Oscar, the\u00a0People\u2019s Choice Award has been won by such eventual Best Picture Academy Award winners as\u00a0Nomadland,\u00a0Green Book,\u00a012 Years a Slave,\u00a0The King\u2019s Speech,\u00a0Slumdog Millionaire,\u00a0American Beauty\u00a0and\u00a0Chariots of Fire.\u00a0Among those that went on to Best Picture nominations include last year\u2019s winner\u00a0American Fiction,\u00a0as well as\u00a0The Fabelmans,\u00a0Belfast,\u00a0JoJo Rabbit,\u00a0Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri,\u00a0Room,\u00a0La La Land,\u00a0The Imitation Game,\u00a0Silver Linings Playbook,\u00a0Precious,\u00a0Life Is Beautiful,\u00a0Places in the Heart\u00a0and\u00a0The Big Chill. Last year\u2019s surprise winner, The Life Of Chuck had no North American distributor in place and was later picked up by Neon and released this summer making it Oscar eligible this year, just as the new People\u2019s Choice winner is as well. So we shall see how the tradition of TIFF and Oscar hold up in this regard.\u00a0Last year both the first runner up Emilia Perez and second runner up Anora went on to a collective 19 Oscar nominations between them, both nominated for Best Picture, with Anora winning.<\/p>\n More from Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n Hamnet is a\u00a02024 historical drama film\u00a0co-written, co-edited and directed by Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, based on Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s 2020 novel. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal star in the emotionally charged drama that premiered at Telluride Film Festival and had its international premiere at TIFF.
