RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) \u2014 Hermeto Pascoal, an eccentric and prolific Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger known affectionately as \u201cThe Sorcerer of Sounds\u201d and \u201cThe Mad Genius,\u201d has died. He was 89.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith serenity and love, we announce that Hermeto Pascoal has passed on to the spiritual realm, surrounded by family and fellow musicians,\u201d his family and team said in a statement late Saturday on Instagram.<\/p>\n
The statement did not provide a cause of death or say where he had died.<\/p>\n
Pascoal was an instantly recognizable figure with his mane of white hair and thick beard. He created music that defied fixed labels and blended jazz, samba, Brazilian popular music (MPB), bossa nova, chorinho and forro.<\/p>\n
An accomplished pianist, accordionist and flautist, Pascoal also used more unconventional objects to produce sounds, including pints of beer, dolls, body parts, tea cups, and \u2014 perhaps most famously \u2014 live pigs.<\/p>\n
On his 1977 album \u201cSlaves Mass,\u201d Pascoal squeezed a piglet to make it squeal for the opening of a track. A photo of him with the animal in his arms appeared on its back cover.<\/p>\n
Born on June 22, 1936, in Alagoas state in Brazil\u2019s poor northeast, his albino condition allowed him to escape working in the fields under the harsh sun. He taught himself to play his father\u2019s accordion instead.<\/p>\n
Pascoal moved with his family to the port city of Recife aged 14, where he continued to develop his skills and performed on local radio stations.<\/p>\n
He later headed to Rio de Janeiro<\/a> and Sao Paulo<\/a>. He worked with the drummer and percussionist Airto Moreira during the 1960s, who took Pascoal on tour to the U.S. where he met Miles Davis<\/a>. Pascoal played on Davis\u2019 1971 album \u201cLive-Evil.\u201d<\/p>\n The meeting with Miles kickstarted an international career that continued well into Pascoal\u2019s 80s.<\/p>\n \u201cI was born music; I haven\u2019t done anything without music,\u201d he told Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo last year. \u201cWhat I write on a toilet bowl is as important as what I write on any paper, because music is sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n On the website of the Barbican, a London venue where Pascoal was due to play in November, he is described as an \u201ciconic Brazilian composer\u201d who created more than 10,000 compositions.<\/p>\n Tributes for Pascoal poured in after the announcement of his death.<\/p>\n \u201cBrazilian music and culture owe a great deal to Hermeto Pascoal,\u201d President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a> said Saturday on X.
