Emma Heming Willis<\/strong> <\/a>has had to adapt to life as not only a wife but as a caregiver of her husband, Bruce Willis<\/strong><\/a>, as he battles frontotemporal dementia (FTD). And one of those shifts is in the way they communicate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBruce and I now have our own language, our own way to be with each other,\u201d Heming Willis told The Sunday Times<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Saturday, September 13. \u201cIt\u2019s just about sitting with him, walking with him, listening to him as he tries to verbalize in his own language. Hearing him, validating him. You know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heming Willis, 47, stopped there, crying gently, according to the outlet. \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she added, before going on to call FTD \u201can unkind disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cIt constantly takes. Even when you think it can\u2019t take any more, it takes a little more.\u201d<\/p>\n

FTD is a brain disorder that threatens the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, causing speech issues, emotional problems and changes in personality. Heming Willis shared, \u201cBruce\u2019s disease, I believe, has given him this one grace: to not know what FTD is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heming Willis is opening up about her husband\u2019s health battle and how their family is coping with their new normal in her book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path<\/em><\/a>, released on Tuesday, September 9.<\/p>\n

She told The Times<\/em> that there wasn\u2019t one occurrence that marked her husband\u2019s diagnosis, but a gradual change in behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t Bruce,\u201d she said, recalling the months before they found out about his fight with FTD. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t the man that I married. It was like waking up with someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Willis, 70, now lives in a separate residence near the home he shared with his wife and their daughters<\/a>, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. Heming Willis called the move \u201cone of the hardest decisions I ever had to make,\u201d but insisted to The Times<\/em> that it was the right decision for Willis and their girls \u2014 allowing them to be children and giving her the chance<\/a> to \u201cget back to being his wife. And that\u2019s such a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added of his residence: \u201cIt\u2019s made such a difference for more friends and family to have their own experience with him without it being my home, without me hovering, or my anxiety of how to manage the guest and their expectations, and then have to see their reactions \u2014 their sadness at what is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heming Willis, 45, discussed the disease on the Monday, September 25, episode of Today in honor of World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, revealing it\u2019s \u201chard to know\u201d whether Willis, 68, is aware of his dementia. \u201cWhat I\u2019m learning is [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Willis also has three daughters with ex-wife Demi Moore<\/strong> \u2014 Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31.<\/p>\n

Moore, 62, and the girls have been supportive of Heming Willis\u2019 advocation for FTD research<\/a> and her devout dedication to being a caregiver for Willis.<\/p>\n
