But did you know that Elvis spent a wholesome, idyllic summer on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.southernliving.com\/travel\/mississippi\/coastal-mississippi-small-towns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mississippi Gulf Coast;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Mississippi Gulf Coast<\/a>\u2014where he met and fell in love with a local girl who eventually cut him loose?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 1956, long before those flashy rhinestone jumpsuits, the infamous Jungle Room, and all the Vegas excess, Elvis was just a handsome, super-talented guy playing high schools and military bases along the Gulf coast. During the summer of \u201856 he stayed at Gulf Hills Resort and Dude Ranch, cruised his immaculate cars along the coast, waterskied with friends, and met a local girl that he ended up proposing to.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p><i>Elvis and June Juanico were summertime sweethearts.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He and Biloxi native June Juanico were the talk of the coast, from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southernliving.com\/travel\/mississippi\/bay-st-louis-ms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bay St. Louis;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bay St. Louis<\/a> in the west to Pascagoula in the east. Dark and secluded, it feels like a place where secrets thrive. Locals even claim it\u2019s haunted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOver the years, all sorts of inexplicable things have taken place,\u201d says Chelsea Prince, Outreach Coordinator for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msgulfcoastheritage.ms.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area<\/a>. \u201cEverything from faucets mysteriously turning on to an unplugged juke box starting up on its own and playing songs from records that weren\u2019t even in the juke box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Haunted or not, the Julep Room was a refuge for Elvis and June. He would park his pink Cadillac under the oak trees that were huge in 1957, and are even bigger today, having survived Hurricane Katrina. \u201cElvis didn\u2019t drink or smoke back then,\u201d Prince says. \u201cHis favorite drink was a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.southernliving.com\/mint-julep-6540390\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:virgin Mint Julep;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">virgin Mint Julep<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A year later, as fame consumed Elvis, June decided she deserved something better than the \u201chound dog\u201d that Elvis had become, and got engaged to another man.
