Stephen Colbert<\/a> has joked about his upcoming unemployment a number of times on The Late Show<\/a><\/em> since its cancellation was announced. Two months later, the talk show host brought the same energy to the 2025 Emmys<\/a>\u00a0stage.<\/p>\n Colbert was met with a standing ovation when he presented the first award of the night. Once the applause died down, the host quipped, \u201cWhile I have your attention, is anyone hiring? Because I got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me tonight who will be available in June,\u201d he said, referring to The Late Show <\/em>production crew.<\/p>\n Pulling out an old headshot of his, Colbert added that he brought his own resume. \u201cI haven\u2019t had a chance to update my headshot in a bit, but I think it still works,\u201d he said, earning laughs. \u201cI\u2019m in there somewhere after I get back from Istanbul.\u201d<\/p>\n Before announcing the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series winner, Colbert got one more joke in. \u201cHarrison Ford, could you get this to [Stephen] Spielberg?\u201d he said before stepping down from the stage to hand it over.<\/p>\n It\u2019s been almost exactly two months since Colbert informed viewers that The Late Show\u2019s<\/em> final episode would air in May 2026.<\/p>\n CBS and its parent company, Paramount, have said<\/a> only financial circumstances contributed to the decision. \u201cThe challenge in late night is that the advertising marketplace is in significant secular decline,\u201d Paramount Global TV Media Chairman George Cheeks said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are huge fans of Colbert, we love the show, unfortunately, the economics made it a challenge for us to keep going,\u201d he continued, adding that the network was also prompted to move away from late-night TV after host Taylor Tomlinson<\/a> exited After Midnight<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n Some viewers suspect that Colbert\u2019s criticism of Paramount\u2019s recent $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump<\/a> was a factor. Trump sued the network for allegedly editing a 2024 60 Minutes<\/a><\/em>\u00a0interview with former Vice President\u00a0Kamala Harris<\/a>. The network has denied the claims that Colbert\u2019s comments had any impact on the decision.<\/p>\n Regardless, Colbert hasn\u2019t let the cancellation curb him from speaking out against Trump while his show is still on the air. When the president gloated about the end of The Late Show<\/em> on social media, Colbert responded with a \u201cGo f**k yourself\u201d during an episode.<\/p>\n Ahead of the ceremony, the host teased what\u2019s coming down the pipe post-The Late Show<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve got nine more months of the show and we\u2019re going to have a really good time doing it,\u201d Colbert told E! on the red carpet. \u201cThis show is all consuming \u2014 every day. So that\u2019s it for now.\u201d<\/p>\n The 61-year-old added that he\u2019s hoping his team takes home the win for Outstanding Talk Series. They\u2019re up against nominees like Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/a> <\/em>and The Daily Show<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe people who do the show teach me what it\u2019s like to be a professional, and I would be very grateful if we could win for them because they deserve all the recognition they can get,\u201d he said. \u201cTwo hundred people do the show, not just me.\u201d<\/p>\n Colbert continued, \u201cI get all the applause and I get all the fame\u2014and I\u2019m fine with that\u2014but I also want them to get a little recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n
