Maybe we should have seen this coming, though: Bates was the sole nominee for Matlock, while Lower was one of 27 nominations for Severance. Shows with broader recognition often translate that momentum into acting wins, and this was no exception.<\/p>\n Had Bates prevailed, she would have joined a very rare group of winners this century who triumphed as the only nominee from their series. That distinction belongs to Sela Ward<\/strong> (Once and Again, 2000), Patricia Arquette<\/strong> (Medium, 2005), and Tatiana Maslany<\/strong> (Orphan Black, 2016). Bates\u2019 acclaimed turn as the rebooted Matlock attorney had positioned her as the sentimental favorite, but the lack of overall support for the series likely hurt her chances.<\/p>\n She was aiming to become the oldest Best Drama Actress winner, surpassing Glenn Close<\/strong>, who set the record at 62 for Damages in 2009.
