\u201cThe Batman\u201d director Matt Reeves knew as soon as he started seeing screen tests from Colin Farrell that there was something more to The Penguin character<\/a> that could be mined, even for as small a part of \u201cThe Batman\u201d as he was.<\/p>\n \u201c[Farrell] started sending me when I was in London in prep these little videos he was making of himself, and I was like, who is that? There was such a burning life coming into being, and he\u2019s an incredible actor,\u201d Reeves told IndieWire on the red carpet at the Emmys, where he\u2019s nominated for his work on \u201cThe Penguin.\u201d<\/p>\n More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n The rest is history, and those videos set of a chain of events that led to Farrell\u2019s Penguin getting his own HBO Max series. And in Reeves\u2019s mind, Farrell\u2019s Penguin may not be the only character in Reeves\u2019 Gotham who may be deserving of their own spinoff series and expanded treatment.<\/p>\n \u201cI totally do, we\u2019ve talked about it,\u201d he said. But he added the priority now was finishing \u201cThe Penguin\u201d \u2014 and of course getting \u201cThe Batman 2\u201d prepped. The film will begin shooting this spring, and he says star Robert Pattinson is \u201csuper excited\u201d about the script.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s where the priorities have been,\u201d he said. \u201cThese conversations may or may not\u2026 look I\u2019m not in control of DC, and I can only tell you what I\u2019d love to do, and there are things they know we would love to do, and those conversations may begin again when it\u2019s appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n When exactly \u201cThe Batman 2\u201d would hit the screen has been a point of some consternation among fans eager to see Pattinson become the Dark Knight yet again. DC head James Gunn said in June before Reeves had submitted the script that people need to \u201cget off Matt\u2019s nuts<\/a>\u201d and let him deliver the script in his own time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLet the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,\u201d Gunn previously said. \u201cThat\u2019s just the way it is. He doesn\u2019t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.\u201d<\/p>\n Reeves did finally turn in the script<\/a>, and the movie is back on schedule for a release that\u2019s expected in 2027. Reeves told us on the red carpet that the delay was a combination of \u201csome personal, some strikes\u201d complications, but he\u2019s excited to be diving back into the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman and believes the sequel will be better than his first entry.
