\u201cThe Penguin<\/a>\u201d was supposed to be a TV spinoff about Oswald \u201cOz\u201d Cobb<\/a>, the grimacing gangster from \u201cThe Batman<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But when Cristin Milioti<\/a> stepped on the scene, it quickly became apparent that Sofia Falcone<\/a> had also taken charge.<\/p>\n

The New Jersey actor delivers a commanding and compelling performance as the spurned Gotham City Mafia daughter opposite Colin Farrell<\/a>\u2019s boss on the rise.<\/p>\n

Incriminated and thrown in Arkham State Hospital, Falcone emerges from confinement and undergoes a transformation that sees Oz become her partner and rival in the HBO series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey actually are so kindred,\u201d Milioti told NJ Advance Media before the show\u2019s September 2024 premiere. \u201cThey\u2019re completely overlooked and disregarded<\/a> and stepped on, and they are so smart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Milioti, who grew up in Cherry Hill<\/a>, has won her first Emmy for her performance in \u201cThe Penguin.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wins the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited series, anthology or movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so profoundly grateful,\u201c Milioti, 40, said at Sunday\u2019s Emmys ceremony before reading off prepared notes (see video below).<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry, I wrote this on the back of notes I took in therapy the other day,\u201d the actor said as she shed happy tears. \u201cSo don\u2019t look at the back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved making this show and I loved playing Sofia so much,\u201d Milioti continued. \u201cIt\u2019s very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world, and so I\u2019m deeply grateful for the bright spots and making this show with our incredible cast and incredible crew and getting to inhabit this woman was a bright spot for me, despite it being, like, very grisly. Playing her felt like flying.\u201d<\/p>\n
