href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/westminster-cathedral\">Westminster Cathedral<\/a> on Monday, the eve of her funeral, led by a military piper. <\/p>\n<p>Adhering to Catholic tradition, the coffin will travel from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/kensington-palace\">Kensington Palace<\/a> for private funeral rites attended by her immediate family.<\/p>\n<p>For the initial minutes, a piper from The Royal Dragoon Guards \u2013 a regiment the Duchess supported as deputy Colonel-in-Chief since its inception in 1992 \u2013 will walk ahead. <\/p>\n<p>Other personnel from the regiment will form the bearer party, carrying the coffin into the cathedral where it will rest overnight in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/duchess-of-kent-funeral-katharine-b2821474.html\">The requiem mass, a Catholic funeral<\/a>, will be held on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>It will be attended by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/the-king\">the King<\/a>, Queen and other senior royals, and will be the first Catholic funeral the late Queen Elizabeth\u2019s cousin the Duke of Kent, <a target=\"_blank\" evening of 4 September, aged 92.<\/p>\n<p>A devout follower of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/roman-catholic\">Roman Catholic<\/a> faith, the duchess <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/duchess-of-kent-death-katharine-b2820853.html\">became the first member of the royal family to convert to Catholicism<\/a> for more than 300 years, doing so in 1994. <\/p>\n<p>It was her wish to have her funeral at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/westminster-cathedral\">Westminster Cathedral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hers will be the first royal funeral at the cathedral, in Victoria, central London, since a Vigil for the Deceased and the Rite of Reception, which usually involves the coffin being sprinkled with holy water.<\/p>\n<p>Evening prayers known as Vespers will be taken by Bishop James Curry, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Titular Bishop of Ramsbury.<\/p>\n<p>The King will not be the first monarch to have attended a Catholic funeral, as Queen <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/elizabeth-ii\">Elizabeth II<\/a> attended the Catholic state funeral of King Baudouin of the Belgians, at St Michael\u2019s Cathedral in Brussels, in
