A deeper resonance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Expecting the birth of her first child, Indonesian-born Sandrayati Fay welcomed the release of her sophomore LP <\/em>INHABIT on September 5.<\/em><\/p>\n

Making an outsized impact with her debut EP Bahasa Hati <\/em>in 2017, Indonesian-born artist Sandrayati<\/a><\/strong> settled down in Iceland during the lockdown years. There, she formed deep connections with the local music and art scene, finding a community among friends and peers.<\/p>\n

Now, Sandrayati is expecting the birth of her firstborn. Eight months pregnant, Sandrayati has worked on her latest creation INHABIT <\/em>for the past year. Like many artists, Sandrayati compares her creative work \u2014\u00a0which stretches numerous releases \u2014\u00a0to her children.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, I would have liked to not be pregnant while I\u2019m working on an album. I didn\u2019t realise how much work it is to create life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On INHABIT<\/em>, Sandrayati explores the concept of the cycles, touching on ideas in relation to feminine biological processes like menstruation and pregnancies. However connected to her physical state at the moment, Sandrayati asserts that there was no link between the album and her pregnancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people find that out, they\u2019re like, \u2018Are you serious? You didn\u2019t plan this?\u2019 We\u2019re like, No, we really didn\u2019t,\u201d she recounts. \u201cPersonally, I would have liked to not be pregnant while I\u2019m working on an album. I didn\u2019t realise how much work it is to create life,\u201d Sandrayati smiles.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the director of her 2023 music video \u201cVAST\u201d, Sandrayati conceived the idea of working with the concept of cycles. \u201c[The director] was pregnant at the time and she was coming up with an idea that had to do with pregnancy, but it\u2019s something I couldn\u2019t relate to right at the moment,\u201d she continues, ironically comparing the process to her current situation.<\/p>\n
