Two months after CBS made the controversial decision to cancel \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d<\/a> the series won its very first Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series during Sunday night\u2019s awards show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The audience at Los Angeles\u2019 Peacock Theater erupted into cheers as Colbert took the stage to accept the honor. There was no hint of bitterness as he began his speech by thanking CBS for \u201cgiving us the privilege to be part of the late-night tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

While the network said ending \u201cThe Late Show\u201d was a \u201cpurely financial decision\u201d back in July, some have speculated that Colbert got canned for political reasons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Always a staunch critic of President Donald Trump<\/a>, the host took on CBS\u2019s parent company, Paramount Global, after it settled a fishy multimillion lawsuit from the president around the same time the entertainment giant was seeking approval for its merger with Skydance Media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Though many saw the abrupt cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d as a warning to those who dare criticize the Trump administration, Colbert\u2019s takes have only gotten more defiant since the decision was announced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But on Sunday, he struck a measured and, at times, patriotic tone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Recalling how he had once dreamed about making a late-night comedy show \u201cabout love\u201d when he took the reins back in 2015, Colbert said he only later realized his show was much more about \u201closs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
